Esther died Sunday evening, November 7 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, Vermont; she was 97. Born May 8, 1913 at the family home south of Grenora, North Dakota, Esther was the daughter of Henry and Mary (Krogslien) Folvag. She grew up on the family farm and was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at the Scandia Lutheran Church south of Grenora. She graduated from the rural Roosevelt Consolidated School, and from Grenora High School, where she boarded with other students in Grenora during the school year. She worked for other farm families in the Grenora area, and as a young adult, she moved to the Froid, Montana community, where she worked at the Froid Hotel. She married Fred ("Shorty") Waller at Plentywood Lutheran Church on September 20, 1940. During the early 1940's they lived in Washington state, but after the war returned home to Froid to farm. After her children were all school age, Esther cooked at the Froid School until her retirement; and for several years cooked for the Farmer's Union summer camps and at the Brush Lake Lutheran Bible Camp. She was a long-time active member of Froid Lutheran Church and WELCA. Esther loved flower gardening, and was known for her beautiful Peonies and Geraniums. She enjoyed various crafts, such as quilting ( particularly with the WELCA), embroidery, making things with sea shells she had picked at the ocean, and recently, making things with beads. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and sharing family history and stories; and was a faithful student of the Bible. Always gracious, kind, and thoughtful, Esther was thankful for the people around her. She loved life and was always thankful to God for the gifts she was given. She touched the hearts of everyone around her, and will be sorely missed. After Shorty's death April 1, 1988, Esther continued to live in Froid until she moved to Barre, Vermont to be near her daughter, Marlys, in 2000. There, she was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Montpelier. Esther is survived by her sons, Jerry and Keith, both in Montana, her daughter, Marlys in Vermont; a sister, Bertha Waters; by four grandsons, Darryll, Rodney, K.A. and Kris; and by three great-grandchildren, Mary Jo, Blake, and Matthew. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Sue, in 1946, her son, Gary, in 1974, and by 9 of her 11 brothers and sisters. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood has charge of arrangements.
