Esther was born in Onawa, on Nov. 24, 1917, to Robert and Nellie (Lord) Cummins. She spent much of her early life in Sioux City, later graduating from Onawa High School in 1935. Esther taught in rural schools around Soldier and Ute before marrying Lowell Amunson in 1940. Esther and Lowell made their home on a farm near Soldier until moving to Mapleton, Iowa. Lowell passed away on Dec. 2, 2005. In recent years, Esther made her home at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. Esther was a busy farm wife as well as being very active in her church and community. Esther was a Sunday School teacher for many years and was active in circle and Ladies Aid work. For 19 years, she was a girls' 4-H club leader. Esther enjoyed working with her hands doing crafts, sewing, quilting and crocheting. She was a very good cook and her family always looked forward to holiday get-togethers and the delicious food. Esther is survived by her two daughters, Julie Britton and husband, Bill of Slater, Iowa, and Doris McBurney and husband, Jim of Manson, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Karen Amunson of Rochester, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Leonard; a granddaughter, Kelly Beth Amunson; daughter, Mary Bland and husband, Rick; brother, Bud Cummins; and a sister, Darleen Pettengill and husband, George.
