Description	:	Esther Naomi Propp made her celestial departure on Sept 13th, 2018 just 4 days after celebrating her 102nd birthday. Esther was born at Terry, MT on Sept 9th, 1916. Read More	Esther Naomi Propp made her celestial departure on Sept 13th, 2018 just 4 days after celebrating her 102nd birthday. Esther was born at Terry, MT on Sept 9th, 1916. She was the 2nd of 6 siblings, all of whom were raised on the family homestead 50 miles north of Terry. Mom recalled her homestead days fondly and was always eager to share to memories of that time. She moved with her family to the Yellowstone Valley area in the early 1930s where she met and married “her cowboy” John Propp. They made their home on the Huntley Project, raised four children and remained there for more than 70 years. They farmed and ranched as long as they were physically able which was well into their 80’s. After her husband passed away in 2009, she remained in the family home until after her 100th birthday in 2016, when she made the decision to become a resident at Valley Healthcare in Billings, MT. Each summer Mom raised an extraordinary garden, which was her pride and joy. Much of the produce was preserved so that the family could enjoy the fruits of her labor through the winter months. Because her childhood homestead lacked trees she planted a large number and variety of them in her yard. Numerous family gatherings took place under the huge shade trees in her well-maintained yard. While travel was a luxury they seldom were able to indulge in, the family enjoyed many hours “out north” each summer tending the cattle. It almost always involved work but was a welcome change of pace with great scenery and the ever-present “whispering pines”. Many hours of her life were spent in the kitchen cooking and canning, which was evident by the quality of the meals she prepared. Everything always tasted better at Grandma’s house! A few batches of surprisingly potent chokecherry wine also came from her kitchen. Winter months were spent sewing clothes, creating hand stitched quilts and playing a mean game of cards or Chinese checkers. She beat the pants off everyone at Chinese checkers! Mom also tried her hand at raising a variety of animals which included chickens, rabbits, guinea hens, sheep, bucket calves, a goat or two, a young colt and peacocks. Esther was a founding member of the Valley Baptist Church of Huntley and attended regularly as long as she was able. Grace was always said before each meal. As her old friends passed away, Mom was blessed with a new, younger set of friends. This group (you know who you are) arranged potlucks at her home, took her grocery shopping and willingly gave their time to frequently stop for a visit and a cup of coffee. With her move to Valley Healthcare she acquired yet another group of friends/staff (again you know who you are) who were always looking out for her best interests. Thank you all. Esther is preceded in death by her husband John, son Jerry and grandson Russ. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Propp of Laurel, Larry (Ruth) Propp of Forsyth; and one daughter Joanne (Vince) Zapata of Worden. She has 13 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. Mom thank you for all the wonderful memories (and meals) you have given us. You will be missed. We love you. Visitations may be made on Friday at Smith Downtown Chapel. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 22 at Pleasantview Cemetery in Ballantine.
