Esther Olive Harrod Barkley, born 10 Mar 1903 at Greer in Oregon Co MO, the daughter of George Washington HARROD and Martha Ann GREER. She passed away 06 Mar 1989 at the Birch View Nursing Center in Birch Tree Shannon Co MO. Esther graduated from high school in Winona in 1919 and began a teaching career in Winona Shannon Co MO, boarding in the homes of the townspeople. She married, on 27 Dec 1924 at Eminence Shannon Co MO, John William BARKLEY, son of John and Nora (HARDER) BARKLEY. To this union eight children were born, three of whom preceded her in death. Esther had an interest in family genealogy and was proud of her Native Cherokee heritage. Her mother Mattie was ½ Cherokee by blood; she was the daughter of James Monroe GREER and Elizabeth Ann DENNY. Lizzie (DENNY) GREER was full Cherokee Indian, born in Smith Co TN in 1826. Esther also descended from the famous HARRODS. Her ancestor James HARROD came from England and settled in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It was his younger son James whose name is connected to the early settlement of Kentucky and the founding of Harrodsburg. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, John William BARKLEY, daughter Lillian, and sons Bill and Don; her parents, George and Martha; siblings Joseph Leonard HARROD, Blanche GOSNELL, Lyle HARROD, and Rachel HUDSON. She is survived by her children and spouses, Norrine and Brownie NORRIS, Max and Lola BARKLEY, Larry and Marguerite BARKLEY, Jennie PREWETT and Shannon GOLDBERG; siblings Lydia COOPER MITCHELL, Edith SMOTHERMAN, and George Monroe HARROD; twenty grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; many friends and acquaintances. Esther was a lifelong member of the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). She raised her family in that faith, in the belief that they would all be together again in Heaven. Funeral services were under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona with interment in the Pine Lawn Cemetery where she was laid to rest by her husband and children.
