ESTHER NOLAND Esther Sarah Bretz, youngest of nine children of William and Elizabeth Bretz, was born in Holmes county, Ohio, on April 4th, 1838, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Randall, in Chariton, Iowa, April 10, 1926, aged 88 years and 6 days. When 16 years old, she came to Iowa in a covered wagon with a brother and sister and family, locating in Clayton county, living there until 1864, when she moved to Scott, Iowa, and four years later to Hardin county, where she lived for 29 years. In the year 1897 the family moved to Lucas county where she resided until her death. On Oct. 18, 1857, she was united in marriage to Mr. Adam M. Noland who preceded her in death on April 27, 1908. Since that time she has made her home with her daughters, Mrs. Randall and Mrs. Clark Hollingshead. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Noland. Harry died at the age of 13 months and Nellie at the age of 13 years. Six of the children are living and are: Mrs. Viola Lepley, of Sumner, Montana; W. P. Noland, of Sacramento, California; Adam M. Noland, of Turlock, California; Mrs. Mary Seal, Morningside, Alberta, Canada; Mrs. Margaret Randall, Chariton, Iowa; and Mrs. Josephine Hollingshead, Kenosha, Wisconsin. She also leaves 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Noland was converted and united with the M. E. church at the age of 11 years, later uniting with the Presbyterian church, where she retained her memebership until her Lord called her to the church triumphant. She was a devoted wife and mother, always looking after the welfare of her family and others, and was a kind and affectionate neighbor. Funeral services were held at the Bethel United Brethren church on Monday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Geo. J. Cornford, assisted by Rev. Haugham. Burial was in the Bethel cemetery.
