Description	:	Esther Thurm, 86, of Denver, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Esther Sassmann was born Sept. 9, 1922, the daughter of Elmer and Lydia (Westendorf) Sassmann on the family farm in Tripoli, Iowa. She was baptized Oct. 1, 1922, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli and confirmed on Palm Sunday, 1937, at Crane Creek Church, Tripoli. She attended Tripoli schools and would later earn her GED through Denver Community Schools. On Feb. 6, 1944, she was united in marriage to Elmer Thurm at Crane Creek Church in Tripoli. Esther Sassmann was born Sept. 9, 1922, the daughter of Elmer and Lydia (Westendorf) Sassmann on the family farm in Tripoli, Iowa. She was baptized Oct. 1, 1922, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli and confirmed on Palm Sunday, 1937, at Crane Creek Church, Tripoli. She attended Tripoli schools and would later earn her GED through Denver Community Schools. On Feb. 6, 1944, she was united in marriage to Elmer Thurm at Crane Creek Church in Tripoli. To this union three sons were born. Esther worked from home where she raised her children and also dedicated 17 years as a custodian at Denver Public Schools. Esther was a longtime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church where she served on the Ruth Circle, Altar Guild and was a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and cooking family meals. She made certain that every family member had a warm angel food cake on his or her birthday, which often meant trips to the post office to send cakes all over the country. Esther enjoyed spending time with her family on numerous camping trips throughout the area over the years. She had a great love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even during her final hours as her family gathered together, Esther continued to lead us by example with her strong faith. She left us with these words: "Prayer can become habit but God puts our thoughts and feelings together to give us peace." Thank you for creating our family and being the foundation that we will continue to build upon. With love from all of us that will never forget you. Those thankful for having shared in Esther's life include her husband, Elmer of Denver; sons, Paul (Janice) Thurm of Waverly, Dennis (Mary) Thurm of Denver, James (Phyllis) Thurm of Rapid City, S.D.; grandchildren, Darren (Andrea) Thurm, Adam (Amanda Henke) Thurm, Kevin Thurm, Nichole (Rene) Valverde, Jason Thurm, Jennifer (Christopher) James, Nathan (Maria) Lail, Jocelyn Lail; great-grandchildren, Nicolas Valverde, Shelby Thurm, Arianna Valverde; one brother, Mervin (Florence) Sassmann; one sister, Marian (Darrel) Brandt. Esther is preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Harlan Iserman. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Denver. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Denver and for an hour prior to service time at the church on Saturday.
