Ethan was born at Barss Corner fifty-three years ago, the son of the late Morton Chesley and Mrs. Chesley, who is now residing with her brother, Richard DeLong, in Farmington. Ethan's brother, Lee, was born in New Germany four years later, and the boys grew up together at their New Germany home. Lee was unmarried. Ethan married Miss Lola DeLong, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jordan DeLong, Barss Corner. He and his wife took up residence in Somerville, Massachusetts, where they lived for sixteen years. Later, both Mr. and Mrs. Chesley were employed by a wealthy New York family, Mr. Edward Gould (deceased) and his wife, at Osterville, Cape Cod, and Mr. Chesley was there at the time of his death. Lee Chesley went to the United States, and shortly after the Americans joined in the Great War, he enlisted in the American Army and served overseas until after the Armistice was signed. He was reported lost for several months, but returned to the States, where he became a member of the American Legion. He was employed with the W.P.A. for some time, but it is believed he was not working during the week previous to his death, which was due to heart disease. His body was found at his boarding house in Nashua, New Hampshire, early Monday evening, January 11th. The Nashua policemen got in touch with police in Osterville on Tuesday afternoon and through them communicated the news of his death to his brother, Ethan. Mrs. E. Chesley had gone up to Boston, following the departure of Mrs. Gould to Bermuda, where she went for a three month vacation and at seven o'clock on Tuesday evening she telephoned to her husband, who had remained to close up the Gould residence. Mr. Chesley complained to his wife that he was not feeling well, owing to the shock of his brother's death, and said that he would immediatley make arrangements to accompany Lee's body to Nova Scotia on Wednesday's boat from Boston to Yarmouth. He was alone in the house at the time, and at twenty minutes past nine o'clock that evening, his dead body was discovered slumped at the foot of the stairs by Edward Gould, Jr., who lived right next to his mother's home. A medical examination confirmed the belief that his death also was due to heart failure. The general belief is that he collapsed after speaking to his wife, because it was afterwards learned that he had not made the arrangements for Lee's body. The bodies of both brothers were taken by car to the boat at Boston and were accompanied to Barss Corner by Mrs. E. Chesley; her brother, Maurice DeLong of Weston; and Mrs. I.M. Knox, Roslindale, Mass., a cousin of the Chesley brothers. The remains were taken to Langille's Untertaking rooms, where they lay until the funeral on Sunday. The double fuenral service was held at the Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. B.G. Smith officiating. The service was largely attended by friends of the Chesley family from New Germany and Barss Corner. Rev. Mr. Smith spoke briefly and a quartette, "The Old Rugged Cross" was rendered by L.L.Langille, C.C. DeLong, R.S. Crandall, and F.C. DeLong. The hymns included," Nearer, My God to Thee" and "Sometime We'll Understand." Mrs. F.C. DeLong presided at the organ. Underbearers for the body of Ethan were: Herman, Maurice, and Ralph DeLong, brothers-in-law of the deceased, and a cousin, Horton Chesley of New Germany. F.C. DeLong, R.S. Crandall, M. Taylor, and E. Fancy, Barss Corner, carried Lee's remains to the graveside. Lee, being a member of the American Legion, was buried with the Legion rites. The American flag, with which the casket was draped, was removed just beofre the casket was lowered into the grave, and given to the sorrowing mother. The brothers were buried side by side in one grave in the Baptist Church Cemetery. Floral offerings included a pillow from Lola, and sprays from other relatives and were very beautiful. Surviving the brothers are their mother and Ethan's wife. Lee was last seen by his mother about five years ago, when he visited her at Boston, where she was residing with Ethan and his wife. Ethan was home two years ago on a six week visit with his mother at Farmington. Mrs. Chesley, the mother, is 80 years old and is bearing up under the strain remarkably well. She and her daughter-in-law, Lola, have the most sincere sympathy of a great many friends and relatives in their very sad bereavement. A cousin, Phelps Alexander Chesley, New Germany, recently passed away in the Mersey pulp woods camp at Stanburne, his death also being due to a heart attack.
