Read More	[Mitchell County Press, Thursday, April 30, 1936] Mrs. Rex Jeremy Burned to Death REVIVING FIRE WITH KEROSENE TO START DINNER Explosion Drenched Clothes and Flames enveloped Her at Once Mrs. Rex Jeremy was fatally burned at her home Monday noon, when kerosene she had thrown into her coal range exploded. The flames ran into the mouth of the oil can, which immediately exploded, the tin ripping at the back seam of the can and drenching her with burning oil from head to foot. She was alone at the time, as her daughter Neva, had not returned from high school, nor her husband from his carpentering work at the Birum hall, where he was assisting to lay a new floor. Burning from head to foot, Mrs. Jeremy made several attempts to tear her clothing from her body, and her home tells a pitiful tale of that struggle. In the living room a charred circle on the rug shows where she stood for an instant, managed to remove her shoes and tear at her clothing; in the center of the room is another place where she rolled, or threw down a small rug with which she had been trying to smother the flames. In the dining room she paused, and the flames shot up a curtain nearby. Here her glasses were found, hair burned onto the lenses. Then snatching a wool blanket from the bed she wrapped herself in it and ran across the street to the Henry Johnson home - not screaming, as would be imagined, but calm and collected. Bursting in through the door, she said in an ordinary voice, "Lola, I'm sorry to come to you like this, but help me." Mrs. Johnson tried to remove the blanket from her, but Mrs. Jeremy wouldn't permit it, saying, "Just put more on me and smother the fire." The Johnsons had her on the floor and tried to do as she directed, and Mrs. Jeremy told them cooly, "I'm done for". An ambulance and Dr. John Eiel were immediately summoned, but a glance showed him she could not possibly survive. However, every aid possible was given to alleviate her suffering and give her a chance for life, but she lapsed into unconsciousness at 1 o'clock and passed away at 3 p.m. Mrs. Jeremy remarked when she was being put in the ambulance that she knew it would hurt and told them the blanket she was wrapped in would not be strong enough to lift her in. - Little things to repeat here, but significant of the remarkable control she maintained over mind and nerves, and indicative of the consideration she felt for those about her. No doubt her nervous system was somewhat paralyzed. She said that her tea kettle had bolded over, putting out the fire, and she was trying to revive it. After reaching the hospital she talked for a time with her husband and daughter. Neighbors Put Out Flames In Home. The victor Jorgensens, also close neighbors, helped with the patient, then with others went to the home to extinguish the flames and help as they could. The house suffered no serious damage. Obituary Ethel Babcock, daughter of Frank and Neve Babcock, was born near McIntire, Iowa, on January 16, 1893. She grew to womanhood in the county and attended high school at Osage and Little Cedar, receiving her diploma from the Little Cedar School. She spent a year in college at Cedar Falls, Iowa and for a time taught school in Montana. She was married to Rex Jeremy March 21, 1913, at St. Paul, Minnesota. They lived first in Montana and then in North Dakota, where Mr. Jeremy was a manager of lumber yards. Nine years ago they moved to Osage. Mrs. Jeremy's entire interest was in her home, her husband and her only child, Neva, a high school junior. While she had suffered ill health for years, she was always able to be about, and at intervals had assisted in the Jackson Ready-to-Wear Store. Five years ago she united with the Osage Baptist Church and has been a faithful member since. She is survived by her husband and daughter; one sister, Mrs. Lee Lewis, Orchard; two brothers, Ray Babcock, Priest River, Idaho, and Earl Babcock, Nashua, Montana; also an uncle, Hugh Babcock, of Little Cedar. Funeral services were conducted at the Champion Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by her pastor, Reverend John D. Kern, and burial was made in the Osage Cemetery.
