Her mother, Laura is married and 19, birthplace Iowa, parents from Tennessee. Ethel is six months old, and listed as being born in Kansas. The 1900 census lists William and Ethel living in Yreka with a servant, Lena Moss from Oregon. William is a mine broker and Ethel's birthplace, as well as her parents, is listed as Kansas, possibly an error. Her father died in Kansas, perhaps she truly was born there. The Napa Valley Register, 10 Mar 1961, p2c3 ETHEL SHURTLEFF Mrs Ethel C Shurtleff, 81, member of a pioneer California family, died yesterday at a local rest home after a lengthy illness. Mrs Shurtleff was born in Fort Jones, Siskiyou County, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Jason Cornelius. Her grandparents were Nancy and Samuel Evans, early settlers of the region. She was reared in Fort Jones and married in 1899 to William T Shurtleff who predeceased her. Prior to moving to Napa 25 years ago, Mrs Shurtleff resided in Sacramento. She lived here with her son-in-law and daughter, C P and Laura Breaw at 1715 Spruce Street. Surviving also is another daughter, Clementine Bibb of Carmel, grandchildren Laura Voit of Palo Alto, William Breaw of Napa and Nancy Bibb of Carmel and three great grandchildren. Mrs Shurtleff was a member of the Episcopal Church. Private funeral services will be held at 10 am tomorrow in the Treadway and Wigger Garden Chapel with Rev Thomas Turnbull officiating. Internment will be at Tulocay Cemetery. Contributions to Enchanted Hills, camp for the blind, are urged. The 1880 census shows her living with her grandparents there, age 6/12, born Kansas father born Texas, mother born Iowa.
