Description	:	Ethel Edith Waltner was born to Edward Jos and Anna Preheim Waltner on September 9, 1921. She joined brother Roland, and later Leo came to be part of the family. Ethel was 8 years old when her father became ill and died on April 8, 1929. Two weeks later another baby daughter, Janice, was born to Anna and Edward. Janice died 9 months after her birth. Read More	Ethel Edith Waltner was born to Edward Jos and Anna Preheim Waltner on September 9, 1921. She joined brother Roland, and later Leo came to be part of the family. Ethel was 8 years old when her father became ill and died on April 8, 1929. Two weeks later another baby daughter, Janice, was born to Anna and Edward. Janice died 9 months after her birth. This was a great loss to a family who had just suffered the tragic loss of their husband and father. Ethel grew up with many aunts and uncles as well as cousins who remained her friends all her life. She formed a special bond with her Grandma Preheim as she was growing up. She was a lifelong member of Salem Mennonite Church near Freeman, SD where she was baptized, married and her life celebrated at the end. Ethel attended a rural elementary school, Sunny South School, District 95. She then attended and graduated from Freeman Academy in 1939. After graduation, she worked at the Freeman Drug Store for several years. She married Lynn Preheim on May 28, 1946. Ethel’s joy in life was to be a wife for 52 years, and mother to her seven children: Gwendolyn, Dorothy, Kirk, Nina, Elizabeth, William, and Michael. She was the happiest when all her children were around her. She enjoyed gardening and preserving the garden produce, as well as making traditional Swiss German foods. She took pride in teaching her children these skills. One of Ethel’s gifts to her family was to play the piano and she especially enjoyed playing, Largo by Handel. She also played piano when the family gathered to sing hymns from the Mennonite Hymnal. Ethel made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. Her hands were seldom still, whether sewing, crocheting, or braiding rugs. Ethel went to work as a med aide at the Salem Mennonite Home where she worked from 1973 till 1997. She entered the Salem Mennonite Home as a resident in 2007 after her daughter Dorothy died. When Ethel was 90 years old, her children moved her to St. Peter, MN where two of her daughters are living and could care for her needs. She passed away on November 16, 2016 at the Benedictine Living Center of St. Peter, MN. Her cremains are buried in the Salem Mennonite Church Cemetery.
