Ethel Elizabeth (Thompson) Brandt was born June 8, 1919, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Earl and Annie Luvernie (Langeford) Thompson. She was raised in Sioux Falls where she attended Washington High School. Following her education, she cleaned offices in Sioux Falls. Ethel was united in marriage to Henry Brandt on April 9, 1939, in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home south of Sioux Falls where they farmed and assisted Henry's parents with farming. In 1954, the family moved to their farm in the Wall Lake / Hartford area. Ethel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, (West Wall Lake), Hartford, SD. Ethel always looked forward to springtime when she could plant her extensive vegetable gardens. Always producing a bountiful crop, she also enjoyed canning. She was the quintessential homemaker, and was accomplished at cooking and baking. The family has fond memories of coming home to the enchanting scent of delicious freshly baked brownies and sugar cookies. Ethel enjoyed housekeeping and loved taking care of her family. In her free time, Ethel enjoyed playing cards. Hardly ever outplayed, she was involved in several card clubs and liked working on word searches and word jumbles. Following their retirement, Henry and Ethel traveled extensively throughout the United States. Taking many bus trips, they visited almost every state, and also enjoyed trips to Alaska, Canada, and Hawaii. Henry and Ethel maintained a powerful sense of family. Each year they hosted a family reunion at the Brandt farm. Not a typical reunion, the Brandt reunion involved the creation of special infrastructure including a campground, stages, portable showers and an ongoing campfire. Creating memories and adventure, the reunions also strengthened family bonds. Henry passed away on July 27, 1996. Ethel moved to Sunnycrest Retirement Village and in 2009, began residing at The Inn on Westport. Blessed with a loving outlook, Ethel was caring, kind and was a friend to all. Always polite and never one to complain, her gracious and nurturing spirit will be forever cherished. Grateful for having shared her life are her sons, Roger Brandt (Terry), Blanchard, ID, Ronald Brandt (Kathleen), Alexandria, MN, Dan Brandt (Catherine), Hartford, SD; daughters, Mary Kistler, Hanover, IL, Susan Jorgensen (Daniel), Broomfield, CO, Karen Posey (Mark), Titonka, IA; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Irene Hansler and Ruth Hansen. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Travis; her parents; brother, Virgil; and three sisters, Margie, Alice and Edna.
