She was born May 4, 1903 in Montebello, Nelson County, VA, the daughter of Alfred McElroy and Lelia Burgess (Bradley) Fitzgerald. Mrs. Matheny was a devout Christian and was baptized at a young age. She became a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church at Montebello, where her family attended. She was most recently a member of the Stuarts Draft Baptist Church. She was a dedicated homemaker. Read More	Ethel (Fitzgerald) Allen Matheny, 102, a resident of the Stuarts Draft Christian Home, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday (November 4, 2005) at her residence. She was born May 4, 1903 in Montebello, Nelson County, VA, the daughter of Alfred McElroy and Lelia Burgess (Bradley) Fitzgerald. Mrs. Matheny was a devout Christian and was baptized at a young age. She became a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church at Montebello, where her family attended. She was most recently a member of the Stuarts Draft Baptist Church. She was a dedicated homemaker. She excelled and took pride in her sewing, cooking, and the many skills needed to have a pleasant and comfortable home for her family and the many friends who enjoyed her hospitality. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her love for her immediate and extended family was one of her outstanding characteristics. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Fitzgerald and Claibourne Fitzgerald; four sisters, Lottie F. Steele Campbell, Pearle F. Campbell, Mabel F. Ramsey, and Velma F. Ramsey; two husbands, Eugene Montgomery "Hoot" Allen and Roy Matheny; two children, Verna Daughtry and Dennis Allen; and two grandchildren, Ronnie Allen and infant Tommy Daughtry. Family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn H. and Lorine Allen and Eugene Maxie and Pearl Allen, both of Stuarts Draft; a daughter, Louise A. Fitzgerald of Stuarts Draft; a daughter-in-law, Vivian Allen of Stuarts Draft; a son-in-law, Connie Daughtry and his wife, Doris of Greenville; a step-daughter, Ella Fox of Afton; fourteen grandchildren, Steven Allen, Gary Allen, Dale Allen, Lynn "Butch" Allen, Randy Allen, Patsy Halterman, Dorinda Allen, Marc Allen, Peggy Bryant, Sue Taylor, Greg Daughtry, Kevin Daughtry, Sharon Campbell, and Sandy Lucas; two step grandchildren, Nita and June. In addition, she has numerous great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, and many wonderful friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday (November 8, 2005) in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Judson Baldwin. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Monday (November 7, 2005) in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 260, Stuarts Draft, VA 24477. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Stuarts Draft Christian Home and to Dr. Hatter and the staff of Hospice. Published in The News Virginian on 11/6/2005.
