She lived with her family on a farm in Timmer until 1936 when the family moved to Whitefish. Read More	Obituary from The Independent Record 06/02/2009: Ethel Karine (Jensen) Lindahl was born April 30, 1922, in Timmer, N.D., to Carl Frederick Jensen and Christine Rasmussen Jensen. She lived with her family on a farm in Timmer until 1936 when the family moved to Whitefish. Ethel graduated from Whitefish High School in 1940 and on Feb. 4, 1945, graduated with a degree as a registered nurse from St. Patrick's School of Nursing in Missoula. In January 1946, Ethel traveled by steam ship, the S. S. Yukon, to Anchorage, Alaska, to work as a registered nurse at Providence Hospital. While on this trip, she met her future husband, Dean, who was serving in the U.S. Army and was being transferred to Fairbanks, Alaska. On March 15, 1947, Dean and Ethel were married in Whitefish. As an RN, Ethel practiced her skills in a variety of jobs. While living in Missoula, she worked at what was, at that time, The Burlington Northern Hospital. With the family's move to Helena in 1960, she began work at the Helena Medical Clinic, but within a couple of years, joined the staff at St. John's Hospital where she discovered her true vocation in the operating room. When St. John's closed, Ethel transferred to St. Peter's Hospital, working again as a surgical RN until her retirement in 1987. A gifted nurse, Ethel relished her profession, its challenges, its new procedures and ever-changing environment, and even kept up with all its latest advancements long after her retirement. Ethel was a talented woman with many passions, imparting to her daughters an appreciation for music and art. She excelled in oil painting, knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, sewing, designing silk flower arrangements and cake decorating. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, visiting with friends and being a grandmother. She was also a 50-year member of Miriam Chapter #1, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Sapphira Temple #79, Daughters of the Nile. Ethel is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years and her parents. She is survived by her two daughters, Christine (Gerald) Shay of Laurel, and Joann (Philip) Howeth of Helena; grandchildren, Aubrey (Brian) Harms of Burbank, Calif., Kaye (Robert) Freiburg of Helena, Sandra (Wayne) Goulet of Billings, and Steven (Kate) Shay of Corvallis, Ore.; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Marie (Richard) Kent of Juneau, Alaska; and many nephews and nieces. She has cousins in Washington, North Dakota and Denmark. Ethel was a lovely woman with a kind heart and an optimistic spirit. She will be missed by all who knew her. The family thanks Hospice of St. Peter's, Anna Rolando, and its exemplary nurses, Mickie Simonson, Millissa Riggin, Sherry Regensburger and Mary Margaret Kotson; as well as her dedicated caregivers, Jasmine Barragan-Garcia, Mary Byford, Pamela Eldridge, Jenny Freeman and Josie Dana. Visitation will be Thursday, June 4, from 3-7 p.m. at Hagler-Anderson Funeral Home. A private chapel service will be held. Interment will be at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison. Memorials may be given to Hospice of St. Peter's Hospital, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601 or to the Algeria Shrine Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 1174, Helena, MT 59624.
