Dean was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Wausa, Neb., to Robert A. and Selma R. Lindahl, the youngest of six children. He graduated from Wausa High School in 1943. In 1945, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in Texas and Alaska. In Alaska, he served with the Alaska Air Defense Command. On March 15, 1947, he married Ethel Jensen of Whitefish, and to this union two daughters were born. Dean attended the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1951, and a master's degree in administration in 1957. Dean served in public education for 31 years. He taught math and science in Valier and Missoula. He also served as district superintendent of schools in Valier. In 1960, he began working with the Office of the Montana State Superintendent of Public Instruction, where he administrated various state and federally funded education programs. Dean retired in 1981. In 1981, Dean was appointed assistant grand secretary of the Grand Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Montana, and in 1982, was elected grand secretary, retiring in 2002. Dean has been active in various Masonic fraternities. He was a member of Morning Star Lodge No. 5, Helena; a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite and Algeria Shrine; he was a past venerable master and past master of kodosh of the consistory of Helena Scottish Rite; and in 1985, he was coroneted an inspector general honorary of the 33rd degree. Dean served on many committees with the Shrine and was temple orator emeritus with Algeria Shrine. Dean was also a member of Miriam Chapter No.1, Order of the Eastern Star, Helena. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Fort Harrison.
