Read More	ETHEL LAVERNE VERCOE Ethel LaVerne Vercoe, daughter of Harry and Eda Vercoe, was born at Carthage, So Dak. on Nov. 28, 1911, and passed away at her home Sunday morning Feb. 7, 1937 at the age of 25 years, 2 months and 9 days. She began her education in the Carthage Public Schools where she continued until her illness. In August 1922 she visited a little play mate who was sick with what was supposed at the time to be only the "flu". Two days later Ethel was taken sick. After considerable pondering by doctors the case was declared one of infantile paralysis. For days it seemed that she could not live. Nearly every day some of her school mates would come as close to the house, as was permissable with quarantine, and talk to her Mother concerning her. Many hours were spent after school gathering flowers to lay on the porch for her. Finally the children were allowed to stand by her window. It was indeed a happy day when her friends looked in at her and she was able to smile back at them. After weeks of anxious waiting it was known that she would live, but the disease had left its awful effects and the paralysis had settled in her legs. The little friend. whom she had visited, fully recovered from this sickness which had come to her in a light form, but Ethel was destined to spend the remainder of her life in her wheel chair. This was enough to discourage many from continuing an education, but such was not true with Ethel. If she could not walk she could ride, and each day she was brought to school in a little wagon by her brothers and sisters. When circumstances were such that she could no longer attend, she continued her studies under the supervision of her mother. Her entire life was spent in Carthage, with the exception of eight months which she spent in the Shriners Hospital in Minneapolis. Here she went through much suffering, spending many weeks in casts, but it was all of no avail. She returned home with the knowledge that medical science was unable to help her. She was converted at an early age and baptized by Rev. J. Gordon Bennet. She was a member of the local Christian Church, which she attended faithfully many years after her sickness. One spot in the church seemed to be reserved for her chair, and her ready smile proved a blessing to many. During the last week she was ill with a cold and flu which threatened to settle in her lungs. Although it was not considered serious, every remedy was used to help her. Saturday evening she sat in her chair and played with her canary which had become so devoted to her. During the night she told her mother that she was so tired, and expressed the desire that if she could go to sleep she did not wish to be awakened for days. In the morning she was able to sleep and slept peacefully away without any warning that she was going. Her heart had not been able to stand the strain of her illness. Ethel has lived a life that was a blessing to many. During the fifteen years of her affliction she has become an outstanding example of patience. Her friends never saw her without a smile and she seemed to find more happiness in life than do many whose bodies are strong and healthy. There were many days of discomfort and suffering as she sat encased in a heavy leather jacket and steel braces which extended from her arm pits to her toes. Her hands were always busy doing fancy work and making paper flowers and ornaments which were of outstanding beauty. Much of her happiness was due to the loving care and thoughtfulness of her family. Her mother who cared for her during all of her first sickness has never left her during these years. The thought has been expressed in the home that during her life no one could do things for her "like Mother". The last night of her illness were spent with her brother Ernie sitting by her bed and as she passed away only her brother Ernest was in the room. Her sister Aura also brought much enjoyment to her. One summer she made it possible for them to travel through the South visiting in Texas and even in Mexico. Two years ago she spent six weeks in Minneapolis while Aura attended summer school. Her last trip was last year when she visited her sister at Van Wert. Iowa. She enjoyed this so much as they had been almost inseparable in the home. Last summer her grandfather, W .H. Harris of Brownfield, Texas, who is past eighty years of age, visited her twice. This meant so much to her. Ethel will be greatly missed among her friends, but God has seen fit to quietly close this sunny life of patient suffering. She is survived by her parents, Mr and Mrs Harry H. Vercoe, three sisters, Mrs Severt Dahl and Miss Aura Vercoe, of Carthage, and Mrs. Alvin Palmer of Van Wert Iowa,and three brothers, Harold and Ernest, both at home and Emmett, who is stationed in the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling. Mrs. Palmer was not able to come due to the illness of her little daughter. A large number of relatives and a host of friend also are left.
