In it was the wife, one of her brothers and 4 children. Two of the children, age 7 and age 2, had gone upstairs to bed. The mother was sprinkling her clothes to iron in the morning when she was startled by a cry from the little sleepers upstairs. When she attempted to go to them, she found it impossible to enter the stairs for the smoke and flames. The brother tried to gain an entrance, but all to no avail. When they saw all possible hope was cut off from rescuing the children, they kept throwing water on the house where the bed was until long after it had fallen through. When the flames had subsided, they dragged the crisp and charred mass of the two precious bodies from the coals and fire. Mr. Briles had gone to work in the morning in Leroy only to be called home in the night to see his home in ashes. His two children he never was allowed to see. The fire started in the room where the children were sleeping. Nothing certain as to how it started. Supposition is a burning match was dropped. The funeral was held in the afternoon, May 14, 1901, two miles north at the Presbyterian church. It was one of the largest funerals, and also the saddest, of Coffey County, and while Brother and Sister Briles have the sympathy of a large circle of friends, yet it does not call back his children or give him a home for himself, his wife and the other two children.
