Funeral Largely Attended Last Thursday afternoon just as this paper was going to press the news reached us of the sudden death of Mrs. M. E. Allen, but too late for anything but the briefest mention. For some time, a good many years in fact, Mrs. Allen had been in poor health, and for the past several weeks she had been very poorly, though it was not thought that she was seriously ill until a day or two before her death. On Thursday morning it became apparent that her condition was critical and the children were sent for, most of them arriving before the spirit took its departure. Mrs. Hattie Williamson, who resides at Ottumwa, Iowa, was unable to come, but all of the others were present for the last sad rites. Etta Inez Verbeck was born in Stanstead, Canada, April 17, 1864, removing with her parents in early childhood to Grinnel, Iowa, where she spent her girlhood. In 1882 she came with her parents to Wessington, locating with them on a homestead east of town. The following year she was united in marriage to Mr. M. E. Allen. Twelve children were born to them, nine of whom are still living, three having gone on before. For many years the family resided in Wessington, removing to a farm three or four years ago. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and a true friend and many are the hearts that have been saddened by her passing. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, five sons and four daughters, her aged mother, brothers and sisters and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the family home northeast of town on Sunday afternoon, in charge of the Royal Neighbors, of which order she was a member. Rev. Spence preached the sermon. There was a large crowd present and a long procession of automobiles followed the remains to the cemetery and witnessed the lowering of the casket to its last resting place. The family have the sincere sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
