The Rev. Donald Gibson officiated. Mrs. Kowalke passed away at Loring Hospital in Sac City on Sunday, July 11. Readers were Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Flink. Music was by organist J. Andy Meredith, a duet comprised of Brenda Russell and Carmen Dorman and congregational singing. Darlene Onstot and Janet Onstot were in charge of floral arrangements. Honorary attendants were Tyler Kowalke, Jeffrey Knudson, Kurtis Knudson, Jeff Dorman, Jim Augustine and Jeff Ruseell. Pallbearers were Darrel Obman, Marvin Rossiter, Ken Beals, Ron Meals, Roger Kies and Jim Stock. Interment was made in Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Etta Kowalke was born in Carnarvon on January 18, 1911, the daughter of Frank and Etta Poen Kies. She was baptized in the Carnarvon church and confirmed at the Wheatland church in rural Breda. She attended school in Minnesota and in Lake View. On February 20, 1935, she married Alvin John Kowalke at the Wheatland parsonage. They lived on a farm near Early for 37 years. She was a homemaker and also helped her husband on the farm. The couple moved to Lake View upon their retirement in 1972. Mrs. Kowalke was a member of the Presbyterian church in Early, where she taught Sunday School for many years, served as president of the church circle for 6 years and served as vice-president of the Ladies Aid for 4 years. She was currently a member of the United Church of Christ in Lake View. She enjoyed sewing, making Christmas socks for all her grandchildren, collecting coins and stamps and making and sewing quilt blocks. She was a faithful member of the Neighborly Club for many years. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Marlys and Craig Knudson of Iowa Falls; a son and his wife, Vernon and Sheri Kowalke of Nemaha; 6 grandchildren: Jeffrey Knudson of Orange Park, Fla., Kurtis Knudson of Iowa Falls, Carmen Dorman of Rogersville Mo., Margo Augustine of Fort Dodge, Brenda Russell of Nashville, Tenn., and Tyler Kowalke of Omaha, Neb.; 10 great-grandchildren; a half-brother, Raymond Kies; and a stepmother, Hertha Kies.
