Her retirement ends the longest tenure of service as a home demonstration agent in SC. She first entered the Extension Service July 1, 1918 as an assistant emergency home agent in Florence county. Etta Sue Sellers served as home agent in Chesterfield for 4 months before returning home to work among the people she grew up with. For over 38 years Miss Etta Sue has driven up and down every road in Dillon county, visited in hundreds of farm homes and made thousands of friends. She sits today in her simple but orderly office and laughs about some of the incidents during her 38 years as home agent. "When I first started out there wasn't a paved road in Dillon county, Miss Sellers said. "When it rained not even my Model T would make it through some of the mudholes. There were very few bridges and during big rains some of them floated away down the creek." Born in the Dothan community, Miss Sellers completed the ninth grade at Latta High School before successfully "standing" the Winthrop College entrance examination. She received her degree from Winthrop 4 years later and that fall began teaching at Manning. From 1913-1918 she taught in the Henderson NC schools before entering the Extension Service in Florence County. When she leaves her office for the final time June 29, Miss Sellers will go to her home in Latta to "work in the garden, the flower beds, in the church, as a Four-H Club local leader, a member of the home demonstration club and a long dreamed of trip West." She also wants to catch up on some of her reading. Until 1947, Miss Sellers had no help in conducting the affairs of the home agent's office. She organized and directed the activities of rural women and 4-H clubs. There was hardly a day or night without a meeting. But if Miss Etta Sue ever complained about the amount of work, no one in Dillon county recalls it. ...In 1950 she was named one of the outstanding home agents in the nation. She served as president of the SC Home Agents Association for two years. She is a member of the Latta Business and Professional Women's Club, the Dillon Flower Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Dillon County Library board. In addition to service as church organist, Miss Sellers has taught Sunday school since she returned to Dillon County 38 years ago. ...There is hardly a farm family in Dillon County that hasn't felt the influence of this kind, understanding woman. She's traveled every county road in the 13 automobiles she has worn out in 38 years. Miss Etta Sue leaves a record that'll be difficult to equal; almost impossible to beat."
