Johnson, son of Albert and Bessie (Johnson) Johnson, was born March 26, 1931 in Sioux Falls, SD. He grew up in Crooks, SD and graduated from Lyons High School in 1949. He served in the United States Marine Corps in the early 1950’s. Following active service, Eugene attended South Dakota State College in Brookings. He then farmed with his brother in Crooks. On September 13, 1958, he married Barbara A. Dawson. They lived on his father’s homestead for several years and later farmed west of Crooks. In 1970, they moved to Sioux Falls. Eugene was a long-time employee of Egger Steel Company until he retired. He was a member of the American Legion in Hartford and Norse Glee Club in Sioux Falls. He was also a member of Peace Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir. He is survived by his loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; wife Barbara; brother Allan Johnson; sister Edna Marian Layne; sister Frances Gilseth; sister Vivian Olson; and sister Harriet Donovan. Memorials may be directed to the Music Department at Peace Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Eugene’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hearthstone Assisted Living, Good Samaritan Village, for all the care they gave Eugene the past few years.
