Harrison St., will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home. Mr. Houston died at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, at his residence. Born March 26, 1918, in West Point Township, he was the son of Guy P. and Ione Jewett Houston. On Oct. 4, 1939, in Reynolds, he was married to Dorothy Bir, who survives. Raised on a farm, Mr. Houston was a 1936 graduate of Reynolds High School. He had lived in Monticello for 48 years. Having a strong work ethic, he had a long and varied career. From 1936 to 1940, he was assistant postmaster at the Reynolds post office; from 1940 to 1944, he was employed at ALCOA in Lafayette; from 1944 to 1950, he farmed; from 1950 to 1952, he was a mechanic at Shiegely Implement, which later became Howard Implement. In 1952, Mr. Houston became a member of the Monticello Police Department and was the first sergeant of the department. He spent his last 12 years on the police force as police chief and was the first officer to retire from the police department in 1972. Mr. Houston was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 123 and a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge, AMVETS and the Twin Lakes Athletic Booster Club. He was a former member of the Monticello Kiwanis Club. He had been active in the Monticello Little league and Babe Ruth league for several years. Hr. Houston enjoyed gardening and playing golf, and followed the Pacers and Purdue sports. He also was an avid Cubs fan. Also surviving are his children, Judith Claypool, Monticello, Barbara Vandvervate, Lafayette, Ed Houston, Battle Ground, Beverly Chadwick, Newark, Calif., Susan Marchetti, Carmel, Ken Houston, Monticello, Nancy Creech, Plymouth, Ronald Houston, Lafayette, Carol Wild, Carmel, Brian Houston, Winamac, and Sandy Johnson and Lori McIntosh, both of Monticello; his mother-in-law, Alta Bir, Monticello; 33 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Two sons, Michael and David, and one brother preceded him in death. The Rev. Robert Fosselman will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Riverview IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association and the American Kidney Foundation.
