Description	:	Eugene "Gene" Bernard Bussen was born on May 9, 1910 in Richmond, Indiana. He was the second child in a family of six born to John Henry and Mary Margaret (Welp) Bussen. Read More	Eugene "Gene" Bernard Bussen was born on May 9, 1910 in Richmond, Indiana. He was the second child in a family of six born to John Henry and Mary Margaret (Welp) Bussen. He got his middle name from his maternal grandfather, Bernard Henry Welp. Gene was baptized at the Saint Andrew Catholic Church on May 13, 1910 . He graduated from Saint Andrew High School on June 13, 1928. After graduating, Gene worked on a harvesting crew to earn a living. He traveled to Box Butte County, Nebraska where his crew harvested the Edward Fiester farm. After the harvesting was done, the farmers held a dance where Gene and Violet met. They fell in love and were married on July 1, 1935 at Alliance, Nebraska. Gene took Violet on a trip to Richmond so his family could meet her. Violet was homesick for Hemingford and didn't like Richmond. They moved back and on May 20, 1939, their daughter Janice Esther was born. Gene was excellent at math so he worked as an accountant for several local businesses. They moved to Helena around 1942, but were quickly brought back to Hemingford, when they heard Violet's mother's health was failing. They arrived in time to see her mom alive, and left after the funeral. They moved back to Hemingford in 1944 and purchased a home on the outskirts of Hemingford. Gene built on more rooms to the house so that they could live more comfortably. He was a talented carpenter and enjoyed building houses, picture frames, doll houses, and other items to give to people and provide for his family. He also worked for the Bureau of Reclamation and helped build the Box Butte Reservoir in 1946. On January 15, 1947, the Gene and Vi had a son that Gene named John Edward. John after Gene's father and Edward after Violet's late father and brother. They lived happily in Hemingford, where the children went to school, except for the couple of months when they moved to Ainsworth. Gene was a humorous and hardworking man that everyone loved. Several nephews and a grandson were named after him. He died on January 1, 1961 in Hemingford, Nebraska. He had bladder cancer.
