Corcoran, 85, had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years. It was a "good Christmas blessing that he was able to go on," said his son, Kevin Corcoran. "He's in a better place, and I bet he's a bit embarrassed that we're all here talking about him." Eugene Corcoran started his career in 1955 when he opened Kato's Bar and Cafe at 24th Street and Ames Avenue. He went on to operate the Blue Danube Bar at 35th and Leavenworth Streets for a time. Corcoran also was a co-owner with his brother-in-law Richard Duda of the following bars: Players Lounge, later called the Chicago Bar; 19 West, later called the Rookery; Penthouse Lounge; Goldberg's West; Bill Bailey's; Ocean Wave; and the Savoy. Duda died in 2001. Whether he was at one of his bars, ushering at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, on the golf course or walking down the street, Corcoran treated people right, his son said. He was deferential to "ladies," and he always made time for his family, Kevin said. "Family was always first, and in his business it was tough. He'd surprise us sometimes by picking us up from school and taking us out to get a burger." Carol Mahlberg, manager at Goldberg's West for 27 years, said Corcoran often picked up the tab for new customers. As recently as six months ago, Corcoran visited Goldberg's West every day to talk to customers and have a half-brownie sundae, she said. "They were good people to work for," Mahlberg said. Corcoran, who played minor league ball for a Brooklyn Dodgers affiliate, married Madeline Towey in 1953. She died in 1979. In 1992, Corcoran married Judith Miller. Besides his son Kevin of Omaha, survivors include son Rick Corcoran of Westwood, Calif.; daughters Kathy Langdon of Omaha, Chris Nicola of Parker, Colo., and Maureen Longo of Paradise Valley, Ariz.; stepchildren Dana Thelander, Mark Thelander and Valerie Anderson, all of Omaha; 19 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. There will be a funeral Mass at 1 p.m. today at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
