Description	:	KEARNEY—Eugene E. Stevens, 87, of Sumner died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Sumner East Campus with the Rev. Ken Hutson officiating. Burial will be at Armada Cemetery in Miller. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and before service time Tuesday at the church. He was born Sept. 8, 1919, northeast of Miller to John and Laura (Cole) Stevens. On Sept. 4, 1940, he married Alberta Baer in Lincoln. She died in 1998. On May 15, 1999, he married May Schnacker in Sumner. Survivors include his wife; son, Duane of Sumner; daughters, Patricia Frederick of Sumner and Lorraine Ritchie of San Antonio; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; stepsons Bob Schnacker and Gary Schnacker, both of Denver, and Ron Schnacker of Sumner; and 63 stepgrandchildren, stepgreatgrandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren. Additonal survivors include his daughter-in-law, Patricia Stevens of Sumner; son-in-law, Ray Ritchie of San Anotonio; and stepdaughters-in-law, Donna Schnacker of Denver and Gena Schnacker of Sumner. He attended school at Pilot Knob, then lived and worked around the Miller area. He and his first wife moved to Seattle, and he worked on a dairy farm on Puget Sound. They stayed there until the war broke out then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where he worked for Union Pacific Railroad, repairing train engines. Because of his health, he had to leave the job and work outside. The couple moved back to the area, and he worked on a farm on Kilgore Island near Kearney. He started his own farm and moved to the Sumner area in 1950. He lived on that farm until his death. He was the last of the Stevens family of 10 children. He loved to garden and shared produce with family and friends. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn in 1966; seven brothers; and two sisters.
