Description	:	DAKOTA CITY -- Eugene "Gene" Mahon, 74, of Dakota City died Friday, April 12, 2002, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Paul Albenesius officiating. Burial will be in South Creek Cemetery, rural Ponca, Neb. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Mahon was born Feb. 21, 1928, in Ponca, the son of James G. and Ruby E. (Klepper) Mahon. He attended school in Ponca. As a young man he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946. He married Mary Ann Gill of Jackson, Neb., on Jan. 15, 1949, in Luverne, Minn. She died Oct. 20, 1992, in Dakota City. He worked for both the Great Northern and Burlington railroads. He retired in 1988 after 39 years as a conductor. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in South Sioux City. He was a member of the United Transportation Union, American Legion Post 376 and the South Sioux City Eagles Club. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Sharon and Michael Guthrie of Lake Gaston, N.C.; a son, Darrel Mahon of Dakota City; two sisters and their husbands, Charlotte and Lyle Calvert of Ponca, and Ruth and Donald E. O'Brien of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Robert and June Mahon of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Brandi Mahon of Austin, Texas, Sean Mahon of Elkhart, Texas, Molly Mahon of Conroe, Texas, Melissa and her husband, Thomas MacBride of Lake Gaston, and Brian Guthrie of Fredericksburg, Va.; and a great-grandson, Kolton Edward Anderson. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Shirley Guerry; two brothers, James J. Mahon and his wife, Florence, and John D. Mahon; and a grandson, Kevin Mahon. Pallbearers will be Sean, Bill, and Robin Mahon, Ron Branch, John O'Brien and Bob Calvert.
