Gene was born at home on December 19, 1915, to Francis and Magdalena Flaherty near St. Edward, NE. Gene was born at home on December 19, 1915, to Francis and Magdalena Flaherty near St. Edward, NE. Growing up on a farm, he attended grammar school in a one-room school house, riding his horse, Old Bill, to and from school every day. Following high school graduation, he and a friend bought a Mode T Ford for $50 and drove to Wenatchee. Gene attended Wenatchee Business College. On his first day of class, he walked into the classroom and looked for a place to sit. An attractive young woman named Alice, pointed out the chair next to her and said it was available. Little did he know that she would become his partner in life. Following college, Gene worked for the Great Northern Railroad until WWII. Drafted into the U.S. Army, he served with the 42nd General Hospital in Australia. Upon his discharge in 1945, he returned to Wenatchee and his job at the railroad. He married Alice Titus, the girl who had invited him to sit in the vacant seat next to her at the business college. Gene and Alice were married for 57 years. Together, they built a home in East Wenatchee and raised five children. Gene retired from the railroad in 1979. In addition to working for the railroad, he had a small orchard and a large garden. He enjoyed sharing his bounty of fruits and vegetables with family, friends and neighbors. Gene loved to tinker -- his garage contained every tool imaginable, and a radio going at all times. He could build or repair anything. The neighborhood children knew they could stop by and Gene would fix their bikes anytime. Gene and Alice were original members of Holy Apostles Catholic Church. Gene was a member of the VFW, Lyle B. Cain Post #902, the BNSF Railway Veteran's Association and participated with Alice in NARFE. Gene is survived by his five children, Rebecca Larsen, Patricia Petredis, Margaret Hallock, Eugene (Jerry) Flaherty and Toni Tobin; a sister, Margaret Canny; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; brother, Neal Flaherty; and granddaughter, Kristen Larsen. Cheerio and Ta Ta, Dad! Rosary and Funeral Service will take place Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Telford's Chapel of the Valley. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. Arrangements by Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee.
