Description	:	Eugene Sweeney was born in West Bend, Iowa, on May 3, 1919, to parents Patrick Francis (Frank) and Bridget Calligan Sweeney. He and Gayle Farmer were married on April 20, 1940, in Sioux City. During their 57 year marriage they raised four children: Mark, Marcia, Gwen and Bob. He and Gayle Farmer were married on April 20, 1940, in Sioux City. During their 57 year marriage they raised four children: Mark, Marcia, Gwen and Bob. Raised in West Bend, Gene attended Catholic school there and graduated from West Bend High School in 1937. While a teenager he worked various jobs, including work on the Grotto. Gene worked for M&JR Hakes delivering groceries. Gene and Gayle both worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas prior to his enlistment in the Navy. During WWII Gene served onboard the U.S.S. Anzio in the South Pacific. The family moved to Bradgate in 1946, where they operated a grocery store. In 1949 they moved to Cylinder where they owned and operated Sweeney's Hi-Way Market until 1968. After selling the Cylinder store, Gene worked as a Revenue Agent for the State of Iowa. He and Gayle moved to Emmetsburg in 1971 and after retiring moved to Arnold Park in 1979. Gene had a special ability to connect with people of all ages and was always an active member of the communities where he lived. In Cylinder, he served many years on the Town Council and was a charter member of the Lions Club. He was instrumental in developing the Cylinder lighted baseball field and the Cylinder Fire Department. He supported and worked with youth sports programs and took two V.F.W. Teen Baseball Teams to the national tournament in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He was generous in supporting Cylinder school activities. Throughout his life, Gene Sweeney was involved in civic and political activities. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #2295 in Emmetsburg and the American Legion Post #384 in Milford. Political elections were important to him and he never failed to cast his ballot. He was proud to be a registered Democrat. Gene loved living life on Planet Earth. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and loved Irish music and dance. Gene treasured life in the United States of America and marveled at this land of opportunity. While he enjoyed travel to visit other areas, he felt blessed to live in his home state of Iowa where he enjoyed the changing seasons and watching the planting, growing and harvesting of the bountiful crops. Gene loved the game. Whether it was a ball game, a card game or a discussion he loved being involved. Hours spent with family and friends at the ball park or around the table dealing the pasteboards was time well spent. Every game was played to the end. Mr. Sweeney is survived by four children, their spouses and families: Mark and Connie Sweeney of Lisle, IL; Marcia and Tom Houston of Bend, OR; Gwen and Dennis Pooler of Glendale, AZ; and Bob and Kathy Sweeney of Atlantic, IA; eleven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Rita Derner of Algona, IA and Geraldine Comer of Newton, KS and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife, Gayle; his parents; a brother, Donald; sister, Helen Fogarty and Sr. Bridget (Lucille) Sweeney; grandson, David Sweeney and granddaughter, Megan Sweeney.
