His funeral was Monday, Dec. 6, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with Pastor Jeff Whillock officiating. Burial followed in Groton Union Cemetery, Groton. There was a prayer service Sunday evening, December 5 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen. Eugene Lee Cassels was born December 13, 1928 in Aberdeen to Leon and Martha (Krueger) Cassels. His father was also in the hospital with an amputated arm. He grew up in Groton and attended school there, graduating from Groton High School. Gene entered into the service for his country. He entered the University of South Dakota for a short time until he was appointed to West Point. He returned to the family farm northeast of Groton, where he farmed with his father until he passed away. Gene then took over the family farm. He loved farming and was a very good farmer. Gene married Marlys Seward in 1972. Together, they had one child, Julie Jean. They were later divorced. Gene married Adeline Baker in 1997 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. He continued to farm and they lived on the farm until 2005, when they moved to Aberdeen. Gene was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. He was also a member of Groton American Legion, South Dakota Wheat Growers, and Northern Electric. When he was able, he attended Groton Bible class. Gene was director of REA, 1981-90, which he enjoyed serving very much. Grateful for having shared Gene’s life are his wife, Adeline, Aberdeen; daughter, Julie Jean, Chandler, Ariz.; four stepchildren, Cindy Sieber, Sioux Falls; Bob (Andrea) Baker, Aberdeen; Dr. Steve (Debra) Ellsworth, Lawrence, Kan., and Dennis (Francis) Ellsworth, Woodbury, Minn.; 10 step grandchildren; sister, Jane (Loren) Buntrock, Naperville, Ill.; brother, Don (Minerva) Cassels, Owatonna, Minn.; sister-in-law, Donna Cassels, Faulton, and nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gerald.
