Eugene Leonard Foland, son of Dena (Jones) and Leonard Foland, was born Oct. 8, 1920, in Decatur County. He attended Denham and Westerville schools and graduated from Grand River High School in 1937. He then began farming northwest of Grand River. In 1943, he married Alberta Elaine Lamb. They farmed on the Grand River bottom until 1954, when they moved to Arizona. Eugene worked in the Safeway grocery warehouse and in road construction as a laborer on the blasting crew and heavy equipment operator. In 1957, Eugene and Alberta returned to Iowa, where he worked on the Little Sioux River channelization project. In 1958, they returned to farming in Clarke and Decatur Counties until his retirement in 1999. He moved to Osceola Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 2008. Survivors include his wife Alberta Lamb Foland of Grand River; daughters, Anita Foland and Illa (husband Keith) Carson, all of Osceola; grandsons, Brian (wife Laurie) Carson of Woodburn and Matthew (wife Joanna) Carson of Indianola; great-grandsons, Trenton, Trace, Tegan, Zachary, Jacob and Cole Carson; sisters-in-law, Doris and Bessie Lamb, Lorene Busick, Grace Kriese and Maxine McConnell; nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and care-givers Becky Reed, Cindy Griffets, Helen Enos and Cindy Hamilton. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; brother Roy; sisters, Gussie O'Grady and Mary Foland; brothers-in-law, Joe O'Grady, Carl Lamb, Clark Lamb, Doyle McConnell, Ralph Kriese and Russell Busick and care-giver Carol McGraw.
