Gene was born September 4, 1926 in Bertrand, Nebraska, youngest son of Charles Easton, I and Irene Hazel (Adkins) Hanson. Gene grew up in the Bertrand and Loomis, Nebraska area where he graduated from Loomis (NE.) High School and married Wilma Jean Bunsen on October 15, 1946. To this union, three daughters were born: Kathryn, Kristine and Geane. Gene and Wilma left farming to pursue further education and moved to Chadron, Nebraska in 1948. Gene earned a bachelor's degree in English from Chadron (NE.) State College in 1952, a Master's Degree in Library Science from the University of Denver in 1957 and a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974. His teaching career began in Madison, Nebraska at Madison High School where he taught High School English. In 1957, the family moved to Springfield, South Dakota where Gene accepted a Head Librarian position at Southern State Teacher's College. His career then progressed to Librarian at Wayne State College, Wayne, Nebraska. Minot State University, Minot, North Dakota offered him the Head Librarian position in 1964. He applied for and was granted a fellowship to study for his doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Gene graduated with a PhD in Library and Information Science in 1974. He accepted a position in the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Shippensburg State College in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania where he taught until he retired in 1990. Gene and Wilma spent many happy times in retirement between Pennsylvania and Nebraska. In addition to his professional responsibilities, he collected Civil War memorabilia and studied history. Gene was a very knowledgeable historian and enjoyed sharing information with friends and family. He attended the Friends Quaker Meetings, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Besides his parents, Gene was preceded in death by: wife, Wilma Jean (Bunsen) Hanson; daughter, Geane Rene Hanson; brothers, Charles Easton, II, Sherrod and Raymond P. Hanson. Gene is survived by: daughters, Kathryn Johnson and her husband, Richard of Plymouth, Minnesota and Kristine Kraft and her husband, William of Lakewood, Colorado; grandchildren, Eric Johnson and his wife, Cathy of Denver, Colorado, Krista Martin and her husband, Craig of Andover, Massachusetts and Angela Meldahl and her husband, Steve of Denver, Colorado; great- grandchildren, Brita, Jorgen and Eva Martin, Chloe and Sam Meldahl and Elia and Kara Johnson; brother, Roger Hanson and his wife, Von of Kearney, Nebraska and a host of family and friends. Inurnment was in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Gosper County, Nebraska where Gene will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Wilma Jean Hanson and daughter, Geane Rene Hanson.
