Pontius Rochester citizens and those in surrounding community were shocked early Friday morning to learn of the tragic death of Mrs. Roscoe D. [Eunice L.] PONTIUS, which occurred Thursday evening 10:15 o'clock on Road 331 four miles north of Bourbon. Mrs. Pontius received multiple skull fractures when a door of a truck in which she was riding came open and she was hurled to the roadway. An examination made this morning indicates that the left rear wheel of the truck passed over Mrs. Pontius' head. The Pontiuses were returning from the home of their daughter, Mrs. Marcia NICHOLSON of Elkhart, after having taken some household goods to the Nicholsons in a light delivery truck belonging to the Rochester Telephone Co. Mr. Pontius, who was driving, stated the truck struck an icy patch on the highway and began skidding and swinging from one side to another. In some manner the right door of the vehicle came open and Mrs. Pontius was hurled from the seat to the roadway. He stated he didn't know Mrs. Pontius was out of the cab seat for a few seconds as he was so busy attempting to control the swerving machine. The truck did not upset and Mr. Pontius, who was uninjured rushed to his wife's side only to find that she had met instant death. Passersby, who arrived at the scene of the accident several minuts later, summoned aid and after a cursory examination was made by William EASTERDAY of Culver, deputy coroner of Marshall county, the body of Mrs. Pontius was brought to Rochester. Eunice L. [AULT], daughter of Joseph and Eliza (MERRILL) AULT, was born in Fulton county on July 1, 1891. All of her life was spent in Rochester and vicinity. On May 6, 1915 she was united in marriage with Roscoe D. PONTIUS of this city. Mrs. Pontius was a member of the Rochester Baptist church and the Rochester Woman's Club and was an active worker in both of these organizations. Suvivors with her husband of 914 Pontiac street, this city: a daughter, Mrs. Marcia NICHOLSON, of Elkhart, Ind.; her mother, Mrs. Eliza AULT of this city; a sister, Mrs. Frank SHERMARHORN of LaGrange, Ind., and two nieces. Funeral services will be held at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Harry J. BAILEY, pastor of the Baptist church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Rochester IOOF cemetery. The body lies in state at the funeral home where friends may call. ----- Published in The Rochester News-Sentinel Monday, January 24, 1949 Mrs. Roscoe Pontius The funeral of Mrs. Roscoe PONTIUS, held at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home on Sunday afternoon, was one of the largest attended here in recent years. Despite cold, rainy weather, the relatives, friends and associates filled the parlors both downstairs and upstairs while others remained on the porch. The beautiful floral tributes filled almost two rooms. Rev. Harry J. BAILEY preached the funeral sermon in which he paid high tribute to the life and activities of the deceased. Two solos were sung by Mrs. Cecil PATTERSON, accompanied by Mrs. Everett KESSLER. A short service was held at the graveside in the IOOF cemetery. The pallbearers were William SOWERS, Lowell CANN, Dee FULTZ, Emmett TRANBARGER, Justin HALL and Floyd CHRISTMAN. Those who attended from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Carl MORGAN, Grover M.
