PONTIUS, longtime general manager of he Rochester Telephone company, died Wednesday night at 11:45 o'clock in his home at 914 Pontiac street after a prolonged illness. He was 76. Mr. Pontius had been ill with Parkinson's disease for 10 years, a condition complicated in April, 1965, by a broken hip sustained in a fall at his home. Since that time, he had been a frequest patient in Woodlawn hospital. Widely known in Indiana as a telephone administrator, Mr. Pontius spent his lifetime with the local company and in 26 years as its general manager supervised its climb to a front rank among independent telephone exchanges. He had retired in 1960. He began work with the company in 1910, at the age of 19, and in the next 50 years worked in almost every key position at the plant. His career was capped in 1957 when he directed the firm's changeover to dial operation. Mr. Pontius served two years (1950-51) as president of the Indiana Telephone Association, which includes all telephone exchanges in the state, and was a member of its board of directors for 26 years. He also had taken a leading part in Rochester civic affairs, being president of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Kiwanis club. He was an original member of Woodlawn hospital board of trustees, serving 15 years, had been on the Fulton County 4-H Fair Board and was treasurer of the First Baptist church, of which he was a member. As hospital trustee, he helped plan that institution's expansion. Mr. Pontius' telephone career spanned the era of crank-operated sets to that of dial phones. He followed in the steps of his father, Tully PONTIOUS (the son changed the spelling), in this business. The elder Mr. Pontious joined the company when it was founded in 1895, was superintendent upon retirement in 1941 and remained as vice president of the board until his death in 1959 at 88 years. Roscoe went to work for the firm full-time in 1912, a year after his graduation from Rochester high school and after two years' part-time service. He was, successively, repairman, wire chief, general bookkeeper, office manager and, in 1934, general manager. Later he became vice president of the company, as well. During his managerial reign, the company erected its present headquartrs building in 1939, built an addition in 1954 and converted to dial in 1957. Born May 10, 1891, in this city, he was the son of Tully and Rebecca WAGONER PONTIOUS. As a youth he was an adept second baseman on local basebell teams and for a time considered this as a career. His first marriage was to Eunice AULT, who died in 1949. His second marriage was to Dorothy Van KEUREN, who died in 1959. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. William (Marcia) NICHOLSON, Elkhart; two grandchildren, Jane and James NICHOLSON, and a brother, Howard [PONTIOUS], Evanston, Ill. Last rites will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Zimmerman Brothers funeral home with the Rev. Donald LAMBERT officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
