Eva Helen Schleuger was born Oct. 26, 1917 in Lockridge to Floyd G. and Lucy (Boutilier) Charbonneaux. She died Monday, Dec. 20 at the Muse Norris Hospital Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Eva moved with her family to Ottawa, Ill. in 1923 and in 1929 to Britt. She was baptized at the Bethel Baptist Church in Britt by the Rev. B.A. Rust. She attended school at Ottawa and Britt. On Nov. 21, 1934 she was married to Louis Frank Schleuger by the Rev. William Spence at the Methodist parsonage in Mason City. They lived in Britt where they raised their family. Over the years, Eva served as a hot lunch manager and summer playground instructor for the Britt Community Schools. She also was an office manager for the Britt News Tribune and worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City in the dispatch department. Eva's hobbies included crocheting, knitting, sewing, crossword puzzles and reading. She enjoyed giving numerous quilts and crocheted items to the needy, charitable organizations, local schools, friends and relatives. She was known to make as many as 200 quilts in one year and donated many to the Salvation Army. Eva was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt and FLCW. She was a former member of the Girl Scouts, 4-H, the Iowa Genealogical Society and the Hancock County Historical Society. She served as Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge, was vice president of the Britt PTA and was a den mother for Cub Scouts. She is survived by her four children: Katherine Schleuger of Britt, Louis (Sanae) Schleuger of Lobeco, SC, Lucy (Gary) Anderson of Forest City and Shirley (Wally) Pullar of Lodi, WI; grandchildren: Dennis (Kari) Teachout of Mankato, Minn., Angela Rhondeau of Everett, Wash., Jason (Melanie) Teachout of Waseca, Minn., Louis Frank Schleuger III of Charlotte, NC, Lucy Schleuger of West Palm Beach, FL, Ginger (Dean) Nielsen of Britt and Neil (Stephanie) Daugard of Britt; great grandchildren: Aaron Davies, Makeda and Rayjon (Bibbers) Teachout, Nathan Teachout, Brandon, Melissa and Amber Smith and Brittany, Allissa and Madison Teachout; a sister: Evelyn Smidt of Britt; a brother: Ray (Lillian) Charbonneaux of Britt; and many nieces and nephews. Eva was preceded in death by her husband: Louis on May 17, 1998; a son-in-law: Dennis Flugum; a sister: Fern Smith; and brothers: Floyd (Pete), and Charles Charbonneaux. Eva Helen Charbonneaux Wedding Announcement: Britt News-Tribune, Britt, Iowa. "TWO SISTERS IN DOUBBLE WEDDING - Fern Charbonneaux became bride of Milton Smith of Crystal Lake. Her sister Miss Eva became the bride of Louis Schleuger from Northwest of Britt. A double ceremony took place at the Methodist church parsonage at Mason City at three o'clock Wednesday afternoon, November 21, when two sisters, Miss Fern Charbonneaux was united in Marriage to Mr. Milton Smith of Crystal Lake, and Miss Eva Charbonneaux was married to Mr. Louis Schleuger from northwest of Britt. The brides are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Charbonneaux and granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Boutilier. The Rev. W. H. Spence, pastor of the church, performed the ceremony after which the couples motored to the home of the brides' uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cummings near Rockford, and returned to Britt on Thursday. The two sisters were attending high school but left during the noon hour on Wednesday, so upon return the announcement of the double affair was a surprise. Miss Eva wore a blue dress and Miss Fern a pink dress. Mr. Schleuger appeared in a brown suit and Mr. Smith had on a suit of blue. Mr. Smith is employed in the CCC near Council Bluffs and came home to be married. He will return to work and his bride will remain with her parents for the time being. Mr. and Mrs. Schleuger are making plans to start farming in the spring. At present the bridegroom is employed at the J. W. Niesz farm northeast of Britt." Notes: According to Eva: "Double elopement with Milton L. Smith and Fern Florence Charbonneaux (Eva's sister). Eva was 17 when she was married, but said 19 at the courthouse so she could get a license. Legal age at the time was 18 unless you had parents consent. The elopement was to be kept a secret, but Mason City Globe-Gazette had marriage in their paper the next day. Louis Sr., was 24 years of age, Milton 20, and Fern 18." Eva Helen Charbonneaux was christened Baptist at the Bethel Baptist Church, Britt, Hancock, Iowa on 15 September 1940.
