Louis Frank Schleuger, the son of Russian-German immigrants, Louis Martin and Katherine Elizabeth (Weitzel) Schleuger, was born March 14, 1910 at Herrington, Kan. He was baptized on April 17, 1910 by Pastor Wilhelm von Hennings at the Herrington Lutheran Church. At an early age, he moved with this family to a farm near Goldfield, Iowa. In 1919, they moved to a farm near Woden and in 1927, to a farm near Britt. Louis attended country schools at Goldfield and Woden. In 1929, he began working for the Rock Island Railroad at Herrington, Kan. On Nov. 21, 1934, he was married to Eva Helen Charbonneaux, of Britt, by the Rev. William Spence at the Methodist Parsonage n Mason City. They made their home in Britt. Louis was a machinery operator in construction work at defense jobs, during world War II, at Burlington, Iowa; Baraboo, Wis.; Hastings, Neb.; Montgomery, Minn.; and the Algona, Iowa prison camp. He was a night mechanic at the Hemp Plant in Britt and was a heavy equipment operator for Hancock County for 28 years, retiring in 1973. Louis also delivered motor homes for Winnebago Industries from the plant to dealers for three years. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking, gardening and reading. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, was the founder of the Hobo Day Flea Market in Britt and was its organizer and manager the first year. He was a life member of the Hancock County Historical Society and was also a charter and honorary member of the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association Institute. He is survived by his wife, Eva, of Britt; four children, Katherine L. Schleuger, of Britt; Louis Schleuger Jr. and his wife, Sanae, of Yokosuka, Japan; Lucy Ann Anderson and her husband, Gary, of Forest City; and Shirley Daugard, of Madison, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Dennis Teachout Jr. and his wife, Kari, of Mankato, Minn.; Lucy Schleuger, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Lous Schleuger III, of Charlotte, N.C., Ginger Nielsen and her husband, Dean, of Britt, and Neil Daugard, of Britt; several stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren, Aaron Davies, of Mankato, Minn., and Brandon, Melissa and Amber Smith, all of Washington; several stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Marie Schleuger of Britt and Marie Schleuger, of Bemidji, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, John (died in Russia), Jake, John Henry and Conrad Schleuger; and five sisters, Alice Schleuger (died in Russia) , Katherine Schleuger (died in Kansas), Mary Markworth, Anna Buns and Margaret Lau. NOTES: The family bible has his name as Ludwig Frank Schleuger. He is also known as Louis Frank Schleuger, Sr. or Louie Schleuger. Louis primarily worked as a heavy equipment operator for his sister, Anna and Hancock County, Iowa. He worked for the county for over 20 years. In his younger years he worked on the farm. During the World War II, he worked as a carpenter for defense jobs at Burlington, Iowa; Baraboo, Wisconsin; and Hastings, Nebraska. He also worked as an equipment maintenanceman for the Hemp Plant, Britt, Iowa and installed equipment at the Hemp Plant, Montgomery, Minnesota. During the War he was classified as 1-A until he reached age 35, which changed his draft status and subsequently, was not drafted.
