Mgr. J. D. Fisch officiated at the requiem mass assisted by Rev. Father Carey and Rev. Father B. Kocher. Interment was made in the St. Joseph church cemetery in Lincoln township. Mrs. Sitzmann passed away Sunday at her home in this city following an illness caused by complications due to advanced age. Mrs. Sitzmann was daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Knabe and was born near Madison, Wis., on November 30, 1853. She was educated and grew up in her native place. When she was eighteen years of age he came to Iowa with the Jacob Earnest family. Her future husband, Joseph Sitzmann, was a member of the party seeking opportunities in a further state. The trip west was made in a covered wagon drawn by oxen and many rivers and streams had to be forded, bridges in those days being unknown. The adventurers finally halted at Storm Lake where Mr. Sitzmann and Miss Knabe found employment. They were married September 29, 1874 at Storm Lake. Following their marriage they farmed in Buena Vista county for a couple years. They came to Le Mars in 1876 and settled on a farm in Lincoln township. They farmed there successfully there for many years before retiring to Le Mars to live and the Sitzmann farm was heralded far and wide as an ideal stock ranch. They acquired a large amount of land due to good judgement and methods of farming and owned 1600 acres of land at one time. Following their retirement from active life on the farm in 1919, they gave most of their land to their children, many of whom are prominent farmers in this community. Mrs. Sitzmann is survived by her husband, Joseph Sitzmann, and nine children who are A. J. Sitzmann, Hinton; J. J. Sitzmann, Le Mars; Mrs. J. F. Donlin, Merrill; Louis Sitzmann, Kingsley; Frank Sitzmann, Kingsley; Mrs. John Ruhland, Neptune; Mrs. J. S. Carel, Hinton; George Sitzmann, Kingsley and Ed Sitzmann, Hinton. Deceased is also survived by eighty-five grandchildren and eighteen great-granchildren. One son, William, died in boyhood. Mrs. Sitzmann was a devout member of the Catholic church and was a member of the Christian Mothers society and the Third Order of St. Francis. She was a devoted mother and home maker and one of the many pioneer women who did a noble part in developing better conditions on the barren prairies where she first came as a bride.
