Sitzmann Early Settler Taken By Death Started Farming On Prairie In Sod Shanty Sixty Years Ago Owner of Many Acres Successful Stock Raiser During Active Career Death claimed Joseph Sitzmann, 84, well known landowner, farmer and stockman in Plymouth county during his long life, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. F. Donlin of Merrill, Tuesday night after a brief illness. Mr. Sitzmann suffered a light stroke about fifteen years ago and at that time, although recuperating from the attack and regaining normal health, retired from active labor. Mr. Sitzmann was born August 24, 1852, near La Crosse, Wis., where he grew up and at the age of twenty came with his parents to Storm Lake, Iowa. They made the trip from Wisconsin in a covered wagon drawn by oxen. They farmed near Storm Lake for a year and then came to Plymouth county, settling in Lincoln township. Mr. Sitzmann was married to Eva Knable, September 23, 1873, at Storm Lake. Lived in Sod Shanty He and his wife embarked on their married life with little of worldly goods. They lived in a sod house constructed by themselves the first year or two where his eldest son, A. J. Sitzmann, of this city, was born. Mrs. Stizmann, by good management and hard work, developed a fine stock farm and at one time was the possessor of 1,700 acres of land. He presented his children with farms when they grew up and married. In the eighties and nineties, the Sitzmann home was known far and wide for its lavish hospitality. Joseph Sitzmann was generous, lavish and whole soulded and the wealth he accumulated was at the disposal of his sons, daughters and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Sitzmann came to Le Mars in 1920 to make their home. She died November 26, 1933. He is survived by six sons and three daughters, A. J. Sitzmann and John Sitzmann, Le Mars; Louis, Frank and George, of Kingsley; Edward, of Hinton; Mrs. J. F. Donlin, of Merrill; Mrs. John Ruhland of Hinton; Mrs. J. S. Carel, Santa Ana, Calif. There are sixty-nine grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. A son, William died August 12, 1913. He also leaves a brother, Valentine Sitzmann, Kingsley, and three sisters, Mrs. Wm. Gesregen, Sioux City; Mrs. Ed Wilkins, Long Beach, Calif.; Ms. James McCoy, Fairfax, S.D. Two sisters, Mrs. Fidele Heissel, of Le Mars, and Mrs. Peter Simeon, of Sioux City, preceded him in death. Funeral Friday Morning Mr. Sitzmann was a devout member of the Catholic church and a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph church. Services will be held this morning at 9:30 in St. Joseph church. Mgr. J. D. Fisch will conduct the requiem mass. Interment will be made in St. Joseph church cemetery in Lincoln township in the family burying ground. Mr. Sitzmann was one of the men who helped to build up the church and parish of St. Joseph church in Lincoln township.
