Description	:	Janie "Eva" Lanier was born in Buckhorn, Harnett Co, NC, the 2nd of 6 known surviving children (3 boys/3 girls) born to farmer and CSA Veteran James Henderson Lanier and his (1st) wife, Eliza Jane. She was the paternal grandchild of John David Lanier & Mary Ann Thomas of Cumberland County; and gr-grandchild of Buckner Lanier of Brunswick Co, VA who came to Cumberland County ca. 1807. She is also distantly related to President George Washington through the marriage of her direct ancestor Sampson Lanier (1682-1743) who married Elizabeth Washington, daughter of Richard Washington & Elizabeth Jordan of Surry County, VA, who was granddaughter of Major John Washington (born England 1632) of Surry County, VA. Major John Washington was first cousin to Colonel John Washington of Westmoreland County, VA, and was the great grandfather of George Washington, first President of the United States. Eva married Richard Coleman Poole in 1890 when she was 24 years old, and he 28. The couple resided in Raleigh where Richard was a driver for the Fire Department. They owned a large house on West Morgan Street, and his parents and 3 siblings joined them there, seeking better opportunities off the farm. (His family later moved out, and his wife operated a boarding house from this location.) By 1910, Richard had joined the Raleigh Police Deparment where he remained until his retirement. Richard and Eva were parents of 7 known children: * Bessie Wolcott Poole(1891-1978) * Mildred Poole(1893-1961) * Robert C. Poole (1894-1902) * Infant Poole (1897-1897) * Richard C. Poole, Jr. (1900-1922) * Eva Poole (1904-1928) * Ellen P. Poole (1907-1931) Eva Lanier Poole died in 1915 at age 49. Her husband of 25 years survived her 15 years, passing in 1930 at age 68. He remarried in 1891 to Frances "Fannie" Saintsing who survived him.
