Read More	Stratford Courier Stratford, Iowa January 27, 1898 Death of Mrs. May East Mention was made two weeks ago of the serious illness of Mrs. J.H. East, of Rising City, Neb., daughter of Mrs. P. Emerson, of this place, and whose death occurred at her home, on January 12, 1898, after a brief but painful illness. As she was well known here, we clip the following from the Rising City Independent. Her death was a shock to the community as she had been upon our streets only a few days previous to her sad demise, apparently in her usual health. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church on Friday, Jan. 14, in the presence of a crowded house of sorrowing people. Rev. G.M. Jones delivered a very impressive discourse from the text: "For here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come - Hebrew 13:14." The procession to her last resting place in Circle Mound Cemetery was one of the largest ever witnessed in this city, all the lodges and societies of which she was a member doing her honor. At the grave a beautiful ritualistic service was tendered by the Eastern Star Lodge, led by Mrs. Helen Stires, Grand Worthy Matron of Nebraska, over the remains of their departed sister. That Mrs. East was prominent as a social, intellectual, and religious worker, was evidenced by the attendance in a body of Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors lodges. Review Club, and Sunday School class of young boys to whom she was greatly attached. Her early friends knew her as Eva May Emerson, only daughter of Levi and Mrs. Priscilla Emerson, who was born in Boone county, Iowa, January 17, 1861, where she lived until the age of twenty-one, when with her parents she moved to Stratford, Hamilton Co., Iowa, where she remained until the time of her marriage to Dr. J.H. East, which occurred at Marshalltown, Iowa, April 8, 1884; they came west immediately and settled in Rising City. Three children were born to them, one of whom died in infancy, and two - May and Herschel - with husband and father who mourn her death. In all the battles of life she did her part nobly as wife, mother and friend; was a member of the Eastern Star of which she was for several years Worthy Matron; also a member of the Camp of Royal Neighbors of America of which she was first Oracle, and at the time of her death was Deputy Supreme Oracle of the state. She was a close student and active member of the Chautauqua Circle until her graduation last June, when with others of the Circle she formed a Review Club of which she was also an active worker. Her conversion which occurred in her twentieth year under the labors of Rev. Hancock at the Mineral Ridge M.E. church, Iowa, was very bright, and she passed away, believing in the mercy and justice of God. We can not help to mention incidentally her labors with her Sunday School class of boys in the Congregational church where she was at all times at her post of duty unless prevented by sickness or absence from the city, and that her work was duly appreciated was evidenced by the fact that her class constituted the honorary pall bearers at her funeral. She will be greatly missed by them. In the meetings of the societies of which she was a member she always took an active part in everything that she deemed for the best interests of these organizations.
