EVA SORRICK GARNER Eva Sorrick Garner, daughter of Peter and Mary Sorrick, was born near Williamsburg, Blair county, Pa., September 17, 1833. She was baptized in infancy and united with the Lutheran church in her youth and remained thereof until about 10 years ago, when she with her husband who had always been a very faithful and active member of the Reformed church in Pennsylvania, joined the Reformed church at Holton. She has been a very faithful and active member of the church. Until a few years ago when great age necessitated her staying home, she was a regular attendant. On December 29, 1853, she was united in marriage with William Garner, with whom she lived until about 9 years ago. He then preceded her in death, after a period of wedded life of over 60 years. The Garner family is one of the oldest families in Western Pennsylvania. Nicholas Fouse, the first of the Garner-Fouses, arriving in Baltimore, Md., in October 1784, after being on the Atlantic ocean fully five months. He then settled in what was then the frontier, Western Pennsylvania. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Garner were born 12 children, five sons and seven daughters, two sons and two daughters preceding her in death. The surviving members of the family are: Mrs. Julia Ann Ackres, Mrs. Catherine Sanders, Mrs. Mary Jane Satterfield, Miss Elizabeth A. Garner, Mrs. Sarah Alice Schirmer and Harry M. Garner, all of Holton; William H. Garner of Eureka, Greenwood county, Kansas; and Elmer D. Garner of Midvale, Idaho. Besides these are 25 grandchildren, of whom 19 are living; 22 great-grandchildren, of whom 19 are living, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, of whom two are living. She also has a brother, Solomon Sorrick, living at Altoona, Pa. She was also a sister of the late Adam Sorrick, Mary Sorrick Acker and Christina Sorrick Mundorf, of the Cove. The deceased with her husband and family came to Kansas in March of the year 1878. They first located at Americus City, Nemaha county, where they lived about 26 years. About 19 years ago they moved to Liberty township, Jackson county, Kansas, about 4½ miles north-west of Holton. Here she lived, enjoying the surrounding neighborhood, being respected for her humble Christian life. One thing she especially enjoyed while living on the farm was to entertain the Reformed ministers. She always saw to it that their cupboards were well supplied with good things to eat. Three years ago she moved to Holton to the home where she passed away. Her religious, moral and social life was without reproach. "Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord from henceforth, for their good works will follow after them." Not only was her life blameless but she brought up a large family of Christian children. There is an old saying, "As priest, so people."; This might well be changed to "As mother, so children." This will be reckoned to her many good works. She fell asleep Sunday morning, January 21, fully prepared to meet her Savior. Just last Friday when told that the family could not yet spare her she said, "Yes you can and I am ready to die." The family will miss her in the home but not only as we as members of the church and friends and neighbors. The pastor and his family will miss her sitting in her favorite chair. We loved to call on her and enjoy her fellowship, as we did on an average of about once a week since becoming pastor here. Her death was caused by complications of the flu and a slight stroke of apoplexy. Rest in peace until the day of the great resurrection. Funeral services were conducted at the Reformed church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Becker conducting the services with Rev. Barthel assisting. The following verse is dedicated to her mother by Mrs. William Schrimer. Through all pain at times she'd smile A smile of heavenly birth And when the angels called her home She smiled farewell to earth. Heaven retaineth now our treasure; Earth the lonely casket keeps. And the sunbeams love to linger Where our sainted mother sleeps.
