Description	:	In 1934 Evelyn Alice Baker exchanged colorful Valentine’s Day cards with her classmates at the Burton School. She was ten years old and her classmate Arthur Washington Heiden was almost eleven. The both continued on to Keya Paha County High School, Evelyn graduating with the class of 1940 and Art in 1942. Art kept that Valentine card for the rest of his life. Read More	In 1934 Evelyn Alice Baker exchanged colorful Valentine’s Day cards with her classmates at the Burton School. She was ten years old and her classmate Arthur Washington Heiden was almost eleven. The both continued on to Keya Paha County High School, Evelyn graduating with the class of 1940 and Art in 1942. Art kept that Valentine card for the rest of his life. Many years later, after Evelyn served as a Navy Wave and Art served as a Captain in the Army Air Force during World War II, they were reintroduced in Omaha. This time they exchanged rings at Hanscom Park Methodist Church on September 25, 1948. They were thrilled to be home in September 1948 to celebrate their wedding with their extended family at Evelyn’s family home in Burton. They returned to Omaha for Art to complete his studies at Creighton University. Art continued his flying career while Evelyn was a teacher before focusing her energies and talents at home raising their family of three children, John, Jeanette, and Cyrus. Over 66 years of marriage they traveled often, and Art enjoyed working all over the world while Evelyn maintained a home base, lastly in Memphis, Tennessee. Art concluded his flying career as a member of the Aviation Hall of Fame, having earned an FFA Master Pilot Commendation and Wright Brothers Award, recognizing his lifelong devotion to excellence in aviation. Art contributed to the writing of books about his WWII airplane, The P-38: Fork-Tailed Devil by M. Caiden, and Pilot by T. LeVier and J. Guenther. In 1997 Art’s WWII P-38 “Lucky Lady” was honored with a postage stamp as part of the Classic American Aircraft series of stamps. On May 9, 2014, just a few days shy of her 91th birthday, Evelyn departed this world following a prolonged illness. Art carried on, staying touch with his WWII 20th Fighter Group 8th Air Force at King’s Cliffe England friends and work associates from his years at 4X4 Walnut Grove, and W.R. Grace. In March 2016 he passed away. They leave behind their children Jeanette L. Tullis and Cyrus D. Heiden; two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn and Arthur were preceded in death by her parents, John and Bertha (Smith) Baker; her siblings, Owen Baker, Charles (Phyllis) Baker, Ray (Evelyn) Baker and Oma (William) Weston; his parents Arthur and LaVaughn (Reeves) Heiden; and children (John Arthur and Margaret Elizabeth (infant); and one great-grandchild David Heiden Williams (infant).
