She was born on September 13, 1915, to the late Benjamin and Audrey (Hile) Cross. On June 20, 1937, she married Lawrence Earl Clark, who preceded her in death on November 18, 1964. They had one daughter who survives, Nancy Lee Clark (Jerry) Mell of New Carlisle; three grandchildren, R. David (Michele) Makowski of Buchanan, MI, Mark Makowski of South Bend and Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" (Steve) Mrozinski of Rolling Prairie; three great-grandchildren, Kristen Nicole (Aaron) Freitag of New Carlisle, Staci Lee Mrozinski of Granger, IN and Brad Joseph Mrozinski of Boca Raton, FL; 1 great-great granddaughter, Hannah Reagan Freitag. On September 30, 1978, she married Thornton H. Schwenk, who preceded her in death on June 4, 1994. She has a step-son, Thornton D. (Ruth) Schwenk of Albuquerque, NM; six step grandchildren, Steven, Kim, Phillip, Sonja, Dave and Sarah Schwenk; two sisters-in law, Eunice "Petie" Clark of New Carlisle and Ann Clark of Greenville, SC; a brother-in-law, Stuart (Carrie) Clark of South Bend; and by several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husbands, she was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nancy Suzanne Makowski (FAG 30952052) in 1992 and three sisters, Doris Cross, Olive Swayzee and Roberta Diseth and her beloved dog, Benji. Mrs. Schwenk was a member of the Community Congregational Church, South Bend and a past member of the Eastern Star. She worked at New Carlisle High School in the kitchen and Hamilton Communities. She also owned the Carlisle Hill Candle Shop. Visitation will be from 10 to 12 pm EST Saturday December 8, 2012, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 201 S. Filbert St., New Carlisle. Services will follow at noon in the funeral home. Burial will take place in New Carlisle Cemetery.
