Evelyn Lucille Smith Schleusener was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on September 10, 1916 – the youngest of five children born to Calvin Eli Smith and Flossie Mable Grove Smith. She was baptized as an infant in the First Methodist Church in Waterloo. She was a 1932 Havelock High School graduate and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Following a courtship that began in high school, Evelyn married Arnold Robert Otto Schleusener at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa, on June 6, 1937. The couple moved to the farm northwest of Laurens in 1938 and actively farmed the land with their son Mick’s assistance until Arnold’s gradual incapacitation due to Parkinson’s Disease. Evelyn continued to live on the farm until moving to the Good Samaritan Center in Laurens in November 2008. Evelyn and Arnold were married for 60 years, until his death on December 26, 1998. They were the parents of two children: Michael Arthur and Jean Marie, who were baptized as infants in the Laurens Methodist Church. Evelyn was an active member of the Laurens Methodist Church since1939, teaching Sunday School classes for 25 years. She served on many committees and held numerous offices in the Laurens Methodist Women’s group, including president, and was an Algona-Ft. Dodge District officer. Evelyn was also active in her community, as a member of the Federated Women’s Club since 1943, serving as its president and as Pocahontas County Treasurer of the organization. She was a charter member of her neighborhood women’s group – the Stitch and Chat Club – and of the Laurens Genealogy Society (“Genies”), serving in various offices taking an active part in the activities of these organizations over the years. She was also a longtime member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her devoted and conscientious work as a life member and President of the Pocahontas County Historical Society, along with her service as curator of the county’s historical museum in Laurens for thirteen years, are regarded as invaluable contributions to the preservation of the rich and varied history of Pocahontas County. Evelyn treasured her family ties, and pursued an avid interest in genealogy for many years. In her researching various family lines, she amassed an extensive collection of records and photographs. Evelyn’s love of gardening and her beautiful flowers were known and admired far and wide. She is remembered fondly by generations of people in her community for her endless generosity in sharing gifts of plants, flowers, vegetables, and fruit, along with guided tours of her gardens over the years. Evelyn’s church associations and her abiding faith were of a deep personal significance and a source of comfort to her over the years and at the time of her death. Her favorite bible verse was the first one she learned as a child, around the age of 4: John 3:16. After suffering a serious fall a month earlier, Evelyn died peacefully in her sleep on August 9, 2010, with her son and family at her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents; and her siblings: Leota Creger, Lauren J. Smith, Jasper Donald Smith, and Byron S. Smith. Survivors include her children: Mick Schleusener (Berny) and Jeanne Riley; her grandchildren: Carol (Matt) Sorenson, Deb Schleusener, and Tony Riley; and her great-grandchildren: Megan and Amber Sorenson. Evelyn will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Powhatan Cemetery near Plover, Iowa.
