Description	:	Evelyn S. Hammer, 86, of Twisp died on Saturday, December 13, 1997, at the Harmony House in Brewster. She was born on March 6, 1911, on a homestead in Frazer Creek near Twisp to John (Jack) and Anna (Shrive) Stokes. She was raised in Beaver Creek Valleys, attending Frazer Creek School and graduating from Twisp High School in 1929. Evelyn married Andrew (Boots) Lewison September 3, 1929, at Ellensburg. Hammer, 86, of Twisp died on Saturday, December 13, 1997, at the Harmony House in Brewster. She was born on March 6, 1911, on a homestead in Frazer Creek near Twisp to John (Jack) and Anna (Shrive) Stokes. She was raised in Beaver Creek Valleys, attending Frazer Creek School and graduating from Twisp High School in 1929. Evelyn married Andrew (Boots) Lewison September 3, 1929, at Ellensburg. She worked for local ranchers and orchardists through the 30's. In the late 30's she moved to Chelan and worked for Chelan Apple COmpany. She married Ralph Hammer on January 4, 1946, at Wenatchee. He died in 1963. In August of 1947 they moved to Methow whee they farmed until 1967, when the moved to an orchard in Carlton. Evelyn married Glen Emory on December 24, 1971. He died in January, 1978. She worked for local orcards and packing sheds retiring at the age of 75 from Methow-Pateros Growers. Evelyn was one of the most knowledgeable historians of the Methow Valley. She was a published poet and wrote short stories. She enjoyed rodeoing, but she wasn't allowed to ride because she was a woman. Evelyn was active in rick collecting. She was a member of the Chief Joseph Rock & Mineral Club. Survivors include four sons. John William (Bill) Lewis of Longview, (Jim) Hammer of Carlton, Roger Newton Hammer of Twisp and (Ed) Hammer of Brewster; two daughters, Marth Ann Parker of Pateros and Rita Evelyn McAlvey of Brewster; two brothers, Harry Stokes of Okanogan and Jay Stockes of Twisp; two sisters Jackie Bovee of Winthrop and Cecilia Campbell of Twisp; 25 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, two brothers, Julian and John, and one grandchild. (Quad City Herald, Dec 18, 1997, pg 10)
