Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Burial will follow in the Tipton Masonic Cemetery. Mrs. Straub was born March 11, 1917 near Mediapolis, Iowa to George Philip and Bernice Maurer Gaul. She graduated from Mediapolis High School and attended the University of Iowa. Before her marriage she taught a number of years in Cass and Gower townships rural schools. On December 20, 1914 Evelyn was united in marriage to George C. Straub in Wayland, MO. After rearing her two children, she taught school in Rochester Township and the Muscatine school system. George and Evelyn farmed near Cedar Bluffs, Mechanicsville, and Bennett, before purchasing a farm southeast of Tipton, in 1952. They lived there until 1983 when they moved to Tipton. In 1991 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Straub had many interests which included reading, music, gardening, politics and genealogy. Music was always a special part of her life. She was gifted with an exceptionally fine soprano singing voice. Often she sang solos in various area churches and was a member of the former Cedar Co. Rural woman's chorus and when in her 80s she was still singing solos. For many years she was a member of the Koinania Society which performs the "Messiah". The group consists of singers from several counties who meet at Wheatland and nearby towns each year to practice and perform. Evelyn was one of the soloists in 1993-95. She also played the piano to entertain at Cedar Manor and played hymns for Bible study there. She was a Federated Tipton Garden Club member and served as District I Director in 1982-83 and was selected as a State Life Member. She has been a member of the Open Prairie Daughters of the American Revolution and served as Registrar many years. She was a former county president of the National King's Daughters organization. She served many years in the Cedar Co. Republican Central Committee. She was of the Presbyterian faith and was a former member of the Mechanicsville Presbyterian church, later the Evangelical and Reformed and United Church of Christ churches in Tipton. She was interested in history and was a member of the Cedar Co. Historical Society and a charter member of the Cedar Co. Genealogical Society. Her patriotism led her to membership in the national organization, "Women for Constitutional Government". Her library contained countless books and as a girl she read voraciously scores of all types of books. Evelyn is survived by her son, Rodney L. (Connie) Straub of Loveland, CO; daughter Colleen (Richard) Olson of Windsor, CT; four grandchildren: Jason Straub of Thornton, CO; Jennifer Straub of Denver, CO, Andrea Olson of Amherst, MA and Rebecca Olson of Sydney, Australia; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Hannah Straub of Thornton, CO.
