Read More	Evelyn Maxine Hickman was born in Spokane on March 9, 1912, the only surviving child of Mathilda (Tillie) Reiman and Arthur Krause. She made her mark early, placing in a baby contest with her picture appearing in the Spokane newspapers that year. They then spent some of the early years of her childhood also living briefly in Odessa, and then for a period in Ritzville returning to Spokane before the decade was over. Among German-speaking relatives she absorbed that language as well, and retained that familiarity ¡§mit Deutch¡¨ all her life. After returning to Spokane her father opened a food market near their home at Division and Indiana, which they operated for many years together, and then Mathilda operated it herself through the 1940s after Arthur died in 1938. Mathilda's parents, Michael and Julianna Reiman, were German immigrants from the Black Sea region of Russia (Ukraine) to South Dakota in the late 1870s where Mathilda was born and raised. After farming in both of those areas, Evelyn's grandfather and grandmother moved to Washington State after the turn of the century, living first in Odessa and then breaking out new land in the area of Quincy. Arthur was of German stock from Wisconsin, coming out by himself also to Washington State in the early 1900s where he met Mathilda while he was working in a mercantile store in Odessa. With apologies at this late date, Evelyn's birth certificate states that her father's occupation was a carpenter. This is false. But her father couldn't reveal his true occupation for that year, because he was working as an undercover investigator for Pinkerton's Detective Agency. Mom mostly enjoyed her years growing up in Spokane in the 1920s being outgoing and making many friends. She attended N. Central High School and with her parent's encouragement, (her mother's, I'm sure), and received a degree in music in 1934. Known to be fun-loving and a sometimes practical joker, she earned a nickname of Spuddie from her college girlfriends. Evelyn remained a loyal supporter of her alma mater, and her sorority, AOƒA, all her life. After college she moved into working at several radio stations, first in Wenatchee and then in Spokane, including KXLY, handling advertising and programming. In 1942 as a USO hostess she met a young lawyer from Colfax who had enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Almost missing her first date with him at the Davenport Hotel, (with four entrances, he happened to be leaving the same entrance where she was coming in). They succeeded in connecting, though, and Evelyn married Lawrence Hickman in September 1943. Returning with her husband to Colfax to restart his law practice in 1946, Evelyn began to become part of the community where she lived the rest of her life and continued to be an active member up to her last days. Starting with Larry in November 1945, they went on to raise four children; Larry, Ellen, Elaine, and Loren, eventually building a home at the edge of town on upper Fairview, where they continued to live until shortly before Lawrence's death in October 2006. As the family grew a little older, Mom was always the trooper; during many camping trips, ski trips, (Lawrence took up skiing while attending the U. of W. in the 1930s), and long car trips to as far away as the East Coast. Also were many trips to Spokane where Evelyn's mother continued to live (including much shopping for woman's clothing to which the youngest son was usually privileged to be a part of. Patience is a learned virtue. Evelyn always continued her interest in music playing piano and organ, and was always ready for a musical event, whether chorus, symphony, high-school musical, or a vaudeville show in West Seattle in later years. Lessons in piano were simply expected for each of the four children. Evelyn did come to appreciate her children's different directions and choices, acknowledging this especially in her later years, even if she wished that one of them lived closer to her. She did succeed with a granddaughter attending WSU, and settling in Pullman with her husband and two of Evelyn's great grandchildren. Evelyn found her place in the community in many ways and many fashions, whether with the many civic, social, and cultural groups to which she belonged, in the United Methodist congregation, or the many friends and relationships that she easily formed. Never too hesitant to express a strong view, if she felt necessary, Evelyn could speak or write to a friend, editor of the paper, bank president, or US Congress Member. Always caring about the vitality of the city of Colfax, she expressed her concerns over its sometimes losses, whether about the loss of the original courthouse or the present empty lots and storefronts on Main Street. In the beginning of the 70's, Evelyn was instrumental in the founding of the Whitman County Historical Society, which coalesced around the buying and preserving of the Perkins House property. Including groups already mentioned, Evelyn was a longtime supporter of Whitman County Hospital and active member the Hospital Auxiliary, Rockwood Manor Board of Trustees (in Spokane), University Woman's group, Athenaeum Club, Monday Musical, helping at the Grandmother's shop, and taking part in the many events and projects of this community as so many others here have done. We would like to thank all of the friends and the ones who gave Evelyn so much care, as she also gave to them, and especially to the staff at the Courtyard. Mom was always a continual writer of cards and letters, keeping in touch with friends and remaining relatives from near and far away. In particular, Evelyn always cared about the younger people, and gave her friendship, encouragement, and support to individuals through her many decades and the generations here. As several people's favorite lady about town, our Mom always remained young at heart herself, and never lost her own child-like sense of fun. Evelyn is survived by her four children, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. =========================================
