Read More	Lawrence Earl Hickman, son of a pioneer Whitman County family, attorney, public servant, husband and father, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, in the presence of family members at the courtyard in Colfax, hours before his 95th birthday. He was the first child born to Roy and Pauline Hickman on Nov. 1, 1911, on upper Rebel Flat near Colfax. Two years later he was joined by a sister, Marie. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to the Hickman homestead on the breaks of the Snake River above Almota. Lawrence attended Onecho School, aspiring at an early age to become a lawyer. He graduated from Colfax High School in 1929, one week after the unexpected death of his father. At age 17, Lawrence became the protector of his mother and sister and manager of the Hickman farm with the assistance of his uncles, Arthur Payne and later Horace Rogers. Still, he managed to achieve his dream, graduating from the university of Washington and the UW Law School, and passing the state bar exam. In 1936 he returned to Colfax and began his legal career, partnering through the years with S.R. Clegg, Philip Paris and Ronald Webster. In 1972 he successfully argued on behalf of the Almota Elevator Company against the federal government before the U.S. Supreme Court. Lawrence was still filing court briefs as late as this summer. Lawrence volunteered and served in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a legal counsel. He married Evelyn Krause Sept. 5, 1943, in Spokane. He was elected Whitman County prosecutor in 1946 and remained in the position until 1957. He was interim sheriff following the Pullman Easter Day massacre in 1949. Later, he masterminded the raid and closure of the infamous Pioneer Hotel in Colfax. Lawrence was elected one of the original Whitman County Port commissioners in 1959. He also served as port attorney. In 1971, as deputy prosecutor, he helped negotiate a peaceful conclusion to the WSU black student protest in Colfax. In later years, he devoted time to his summer place in Kootenay Lake in British Columbia and to the Hickman farm, planting and caring for hundreds of walnut trees. He celebrated his 80th birthday by completing the reroofing of the large barn on the farm. He was a long-time member of the Colfax United Methodist Church, the Washington State and Whitman County bar associations, the Whitman County Historical Society, The Kiwanis Club, the IOOF Lodge, and the Wilcox Grange. Lawrence was predeceased by his parents and sister, son-in-law, Donald Johnson, and nephews, Ronald and Donald Roulet. Survivors names omitted per findagrave policy.
