She was born May 5, 1907, at Deshler to Martin and Eva Sittler Van Buren. She received her teaching certificate from Kearney Teachers College in 1925 and a year later she married Claude W. Smith on June 1, 1926, at Kearney. The couple lived in Tryon, Hershey, Lewellen, Grant, and North Platte, where Claude served as superintendent. Smith, 101, of North Platte passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at Linden Court. She was born May 5, 1907, at Deshler to Martin and Eva Sittler Van Buren. She received her teaching certificate from Kearney Teachers College in 1925 and a year later she married Claude W. Smith on June 1, 1926, at Kearney. The couple lived in Tryon, Hershey, Lewellen, Grant, and North Platte, where Claude served as superintendent. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 82 years, past president of United Methodist Women, former member of Happy Hillside and Miller Extension Clubs and Chapters of AK and HO-PEO. Evelyn was a 4-H leader for more than 10 years and a volunteer for many years at Valley View Nursing Home and the Lincoln County Historical Museum. Survivors include daughter Jean States of North Platte; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, son-in-law Dr. Jerry States, daughter and son-in-law June and Harold Burdick, and great-grandson Kael States. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greta Leach officiating. Burial will be at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to the Lincoln County Historical Museum through the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation or the donor''s choice. Arrangements are with Carpenter Memorial Chapel.
