June Marie Burdick was born June 23, 1927 at her grandmother's home in Kearney, Nebraska to Claude and Evelyn (Van Buren) Smith. Her father was a teacher and Superintendent at Tryon, Hershey, and Lewellen while she grew up and received her education. She graduated from Lewellen Rural High School in 1944 as Salutatorian of her class. She attended Kearney State College, choosing to lake a two-year secretarial course, minoring in Home Economics and Music. She sang with the College Choir and in small groups. She was a member of the Zeta Chi Alpha sorority, the Tironians (Commercial students group), the Appolonians (Music Appreciation group), YWCA. and was elected a member of the College Women's League. Following her college years, June was employed in the Lincoln County Clerk's office in North Platte, until she married Harold Burdick on June 8, 1947 at the North Platte Methodist Church. Harold and June lived on a farm northeast of Lewellen for two years, then lived on the Clarence Reed farm south of I.ewellen for five years. In 1953, they bought the George Post farm northwest of town and still reside there. They have farmed for over 40 years, acquiring additional land in the area and a ranch 15 miles northeast of Lewellen. Harold and June helped establish the Lewellen Youth Center, and worked with 4-H and Scout groups for several years. June served a term on the Lewellen Rural High School Board, and had a special interest in music. She was an organist at her church for 20 years, as well as directing the youth and adult choirs. Her main hobby was her love of oil and water color painting. Harold and June enjoyed their travels in the United States, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, and a little fishing and boating on Lake McConaughy. They were charter members of the. Ash Hollow Old Timers Roundup group, and traveled to the National Old Timer's Rodeo Finals in Amarillo, Texas. June is survived by her husband Harold, two children, Bruce and wife, Ellen of Lewellen, Marianne and husband, Gary Fisher of Rock River, Wyoming, sister, Jean States of North Platte, Mother, Evelyn Smith of North Platte, three grandchildren: Gene Tophoj, Dawn Valdez, Kim Tophoj; four great grandchildren: Brady Tophoj, Makayla and Damian Valdez, and McKenzie Tophoj. She was preceded in death by her father.
