Jones, who died Friday in the Big Timber hospital, was held Saturday morning in the courthouse. Drs. L. W. Baskett and A. P. O'Leary held an autopsy Friday night and testified to their findings before the jury called by Coroner Graff. Mr. Graff and county Attorney MacFarlane conducted the examination. Abel Skaarland, first witness, told of going to the McCall ranch the Wednesday of the shooting. His first tip that day was after lunch. Mrs. Jones came from the Jones ranch to the McCall ranch somewhere around one o'clock, asking to be taken to the sheriff's office. She told witness her husband had shot himself. Asked why he had done that, she informed Skaarland Jones had worked that morning and when he came in for dinner, not finding it ready "he got mad and went out." She said she had paid no attention to him, going on with preparations for the meal, then when he failed to come at her call she went to the car and found him. Skaarland and his companion wanted to go to the assistance of the man, a suggestion vetoed by Mrs. Jones who said Jones was dead, no use going. Skaarland brought Mrs. Jones to the sheriff's office. Dr. L. W. Baskett described the wounds, identified bullets shown by the coroner as those taken from deceased man's head. He testified that Jones was quite rational at times. In answer to questions deceased wouldn't say more than, "I didn't do it." and one time, "it made no difference anyway." The testimony of the autopsy was that one bullet, a .32 entered the skin just a little above but about between the eyes, went up a little, then flattened out to about the thickness of a silver quarter against the skull. The second, also a .32 entered the right side of the head at the temple, went directly across, passed through a part of the brain, struck the skull in the left side about an inch and a half above the ear and bounded back. Dr. A.P. O'Leary had found Jones unconscious when he arrived at the hospital, where he and Dr. Baskett were called to perform an emergency operation on E E. Jones. The doctor could at no time be certain that the patient recognized him. His testimony regarding Jones' condition and wounds corroborated Dr. Baskett's. He also identified the bullets. John Sago, who employed Kenneth Jones on his ranch, held conversation with Kenneth at different times about the shooting none of which had any importance. He had not recently seen Kenneth with a gun. Young Jones had told witness that he, Jones, had heard it was his gun that was used. He said further he had owned a gun but had lost it about a year ago. Sago sent Kenneth, the day of the shooting to work on the water ditch which was located on the Hannah ranch, the boy leaving the sago place around 8 o'clock. Later Hams Tjaaland, one of seven men working on the ditch that day, stated absolutely that from the time of Kenneth's arrival at the ditch about 8:30, the boy had not been out of his sight until they stopped work at 3:15. Kenneth was talking to someone when Tjaaland left at 3:30 o'clock. Kenneth Jomes, 17 years of age, oldest son of deceased, had not been home since September 17, had not been on the ranch the day of the shooting. He and his father each wanted to do things his own way so they did not get along very well. Mother and father likewise did not seem happy together. Kenneth told of buying a .32 caliber gun from Joe Syphers, having it about one month, and losing it as he was riding across the field from home. He searched for it but never found it. He thought the gun shown him was his. Sheriff Brannin arrived at the Jones ranch between two and three o'clock, went to the garage, and opened the car door. Discovering Jones was alive he helped Mr. Graff move Jones from under the wheel so they could take him to the hospital. He found Jones left hand on the wheel his body slumped over with right arm hanging helplessly down his side. The men in moving the body discovered the gun, which it appeared, Jones had been "practically sitting on." He had examined the gun. There were three shells, two fired and the one to the right had shown evidence of having been snapped. The car had door closed, windows up and steamed. Jarvis Jones, a father of Everett E., who came from near Stockton, Cedar county, Missouri, said his son seemed to know him. He had put his arm around his father's neck and hugged him. He had asked his son if he shot himself, asked often, and was answered, "No! No! No! No!" He said his boy had always been "free with me, and they thought Everett would tell his father who shot him, but all he said was that it was not a woman, a man shot him. Jesse Mildred Jones, widow of Everett E. and by her testimony the only person known to be on the ranch with her husband at the time of the shooting was called. Preliminary question brought forth that they had lived together on the place 13 years save for 21 months when her husband and son were in Missouri. The Wednesday in question, her husband had breakfast at nine o'clock, had worked at hauling manure all morning, passing the house with each load. He came in for dinner between one and two o'clock, got mad, she couldn't say why then he left and went toward the barn. In answer to query reiterated as to cause for "getting mad," she finally said he got mad because she was washing. He always got mad when she washed. He cursed her and went out toward the barn. She was indefinite about her getting dinner, but then she had gone to the car to call him. Then she went to the Wallace ranch, where the bachelors live, and then to the McCall place where Skaarland was and was taken to the sheriff's office. Her husband never left the keys in the car. Neither had he intended to go to town that day. Se was washing but she left her washing unfinished when she found her husband in the car. Under Sheriff Whitsel who was in the office when Mrs. Jones came to the courthouse asked her how it happened and she said she never went down there. She said Jones had shot himself and she wanted Mr. Whitsel to help her-told him she wanted to go to Mr. Wiedman's office. She also wanted to go back out to the ranch with them. Whitsel told of finding a .22 caliber rifle tossed on a shed on the Jones ranch. Said rifle had one freshly exploded shell. Mr. Whitsel also had questioned Jones, who told him emphatically he had not shot himself. When pressed for answers as to the responsible person he would say "no" when certain names were mentioned and would say nothing as other names were brought up. The jury, which brought in a verdict of shot by person or persons unknown, was comprised of N. E Oliver, O. Miller, E. G. Engebretson, B. N. Ranium, R. A. Bray, W. H. Shaffer.
