Description	:	Everett L. Poteat, loving father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 84. Everett was born in Rowan County, N.C., December 7, 1923, and graduated from Mt. Ulla High School. He joined the Navy in 1940 and after boot camp was assigned to a Destroyer for a brief period of time. In 1942 he volunteered for submarine service and attended school in New London, Conn. Poteat, loving father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 84. Everett was born in Rowan County, N.C., December 7, 1923, and graduated from Mt. Ulla High School. He joined the Navy in 1940 and after boot camp was assigned to a Destroyer for a brief period of time. In 1942 he volunteered for submarine service and attended school in New London, Conn. After school he was assigned to a Submarine Division in the Pacific, where he made a number of patrol runs on several submarines. One of his memorable duties was to help sail the ex-Japanese submarine I400 from Tokyo Bay to Pearl Harbor after World War II. The I400 was thought to be the world's largest submarine at that time, with a hanger housing three planes and a catapult for launching. It was rumored that the I400's purpose was to bomb two locks of the Panama Canal. Obviously this never happened. The end of the war occurred before they were deployed on their mission. With an agreement with Russia, no "man-o-war" was to be possessed by either country and the I400 was used for target practice and sunk. After he retired from the Navy in 1962, he began his career in real estate. Everett was a Real Estate Salesman/Broker from 1962 to 1985. Everett enjoyed all sports, especially horse racing. He gave his grandsons his system for betting small/winning big, and keeping one's head above water. He was master of Lodge #87 Free and Accepted Masons in 1971, a member of Submarines of World War II, a member of Fleet Reserves and a member of A.A.R.P. He is preceded in death by his wife Adeline J. Poteat, and survived by his daughter Linda Inderbitzen, son-in-law Gary Inderbitzen, grandsons Jason and Eric Inderbitzen, all of Vallejo, and a number of nieces and nephews in North Carolina. There will be a graveside service at All Souls Cemetery, 11 a.m. today. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and Vallejo Kaiser Hospice.
